Mt. Fortuna (North) - Trail, Mission Trails Park, California

Mt. Fortuna (North) - Trail, Mission Trails Park, California

DESCRIPTION

Mt. Fortuna is 1200 feet at its highest. The visitors center is approximately 200 feet in elevation. So there is a LOT of climbing involved. It's not an easy climb, it's steep and rocky. But the view and the ride down makes it all worth it. Don't give up. Just follow the signs marked to North Fortuna. The best time to go is in the morning. It gets hot during the day. You'll definitely want to bring lights if you go during late afternoon. CamelBak is pretty much a given for this climb.

There are at least four major trails that lead to the top, and three are ridable. Whichever one you choose, it is worth the trip. The view from the top of Fortuna North is one of the best in San Diego. My suggestion is to make any trip that results in a view the day after it rains, when the air is the clearest.

The most ridable trail is on the Tierrasanta side of the park that parallels the 52. It's also accessible from Suycott up South fortuna, but you will be of the bike and climbing most of the way. If you go from the grassland area on the Santee side, take the fire road right up the east side to the saddle. Just remember this is the least scenic and most steep way.

All of Mission Trails is great, as is Cowles', but their is an AWESOME ride behind Sweetwater Reservoir accessible from the Rancho San Diego shopping center where the Edwards movie theater is. There's an old steel bridge down the 54 a bit past there, and the trail starts on the south end of that bridge.

The fireroad from the saddle up to the top of North Fortuna has been completely sanitized. It is now as smooth as a baby's butt. I have always used the fireroad for the climb anyway. The north side facing the 52 has even more exposed rock than normal, making it a very fun technical trail. Well worth the hike. Suycott wash is pretty beatup and rutted, so it's not quite as fast although it's more technically challenging too. It's still a great trail for more experienced beginners to intermediate riders.

It's a pretty tough climb but a very good challenge. Coming down the north side of the mountain is a ton of fun. A little bit of exposure and some tight switchbacks but also a very good challenge. Nothing too un-rideable except for that huge rock about 3/4 of the way down after the little rock step section. A great challenge (at least for me) and lots of fun. Don't listen to the guy whining below b/c he couldn't ride much of it.

Customer Service

Usually start on Calle de Vida and head in and down to Suycott along the singletrack. Then head up the fire road and make a left at the saddle and up.

North Mt. Fortuna rocks. No, you can not do it all, unles you are Jimena Florit. Nothing like being beaten by a girl! So, stop you whinning and climb. If you can not do it today, then next time you will get a few feet further. Trails are closed to 11/17/2003 do to wildfire. Respect the closure, or bikes will be banned. I say that as a SDMBA.com member who put in a few days of trail work at Mission Trials.

The trail is really tough, but you can find a lot of different side trails which arent as challenging. If you search around you can go under the 52 freeway and find a lot of trails with little traffic

Customer Service

Go on the North Fortuna and go up the hardest looking trail. It is a long trail, but the backside downhill is challenging and fun

Tried this trail a second time because of the reviews. It sucks! Basically, walk up a half mile smooth fire road (way too steep to ride), turn right onto a washed out fire road and walk another half mile.

Then at the top the fun starts right? Nope, start walking down a rocky narrow single track until it opens up to double track.

2 hours of wasted time, won't go back to Mission Trails.

follow the signs and feel the burn that you came out here for. as you start up the fire road (you'll know the one) it seems like the climb might be too easy, but everycorner you go around you will see a steeper road ahead of you, as the last guy said you will most likely be walking the last 25-50 yards. some of you will make it will no problem eg. if your in biking shape. once your at the saddle, look down the long valley below you find the lungs you just hacked up. turn to your right and go up the hill with all the cool hard parts in it(ruts, rocks, and a few more steep parts)take a break at the top or tops look around. your alive, living in America, in san diego your on a bike and not at work. Keep going down the trail this is where it gets fun, rocks, lots of rocks all the size of babies heads. then some tight turns, thens some steep rutted loose dirt and rock sections then some fun rolling hills. of the many ways back to the visitors center...there is a trail that winds throught the middle of the valley that has some fun turns and small drop offs and jumps (small=1-2') with enough speed you can get 3-5' off the ground and fly 20-30'. I thought I was back on a pair of 223's with a helmet and bent poles running 70 mph at the silver dollar in South Lake Tahoe. once you get to the bottom of the valley you will find a small easy up hill followed by an extremly fast down hill on a rocky 2 lane access road. from here the visitors center is on the other side of the small hill you will be looking at, go around the hill and fid your car. Just a personal note I don't care DH,XC,FR if your riding a bike and bitching about it, wouldn't your time be better spent getting in better shape so your not such a puss and could ride the trails not walk up them and whine about this being the trais problem??????. this isn't a anderson or nobel canyon trail and the up hurts but sometimes the hard ups make you like the times you shuttle that much more.

follow the signs and keep your head up so you can breath.

If you have never ridden off road, then don't review this trail! The climb is very doable - but is a challenge for even the seasoned riders. A few spots that you *might* have to walk.

The rock garden area in the low lands is fast and fun. There are a lot of banked turns with small 'lifters' that you can get a little air on. Very fun!

This is the best 'in city' riding to be had (IMHO).

Customer Service

North Fortuna then down through the low rock garden for a lot of small drops.
