Mt. Tom - Trail, Glendale, California

Mt. Tom - Trail, Glendale, California

DESCRIPTION

About 4-5 miles of good fireroad. It's great because once you get to the top, you have 3 choices on the way down. When you're at the trail junction, turning left would take you to La Crescenta (honolulu drive). It's a weird ride. Very difficult, with patches of deep sand and ruts, but fun. Turning right is probably the easiest way down. Just goes back to verdugo blvd, and going down the same way you came up doesn't sound fun but it is.

This fireroad is part of the verdugo moutains that connect to la tuna, brand park, stough park, "beaudry fire road", and the whiting woods fire road. I think it's the best climb of all of the fireroads on the mountain, because it's steep and long. Brand and Whiting woods are steeper, but not as long. Also, you get to see a view of LA and possibly the ocean (if not too smoggy) all the way up. It's a good ride up, and you can make a bunch of different variations on your loop for the way back. It's an above average ride, and you can get a good workout if you push yourself.

(north side of Verdugo Park) take canada blvd to sunshine dr. west up the mountain all the way to the fire road gate. get your bike over the gate and go. head toward the 7 towers then turn left at the top and continue to the bench where there is a saddle and more choices for the way down. (there is a bunch of different ways to get to the trail head, this is probably the easiest to navigate )

The trail is very steep to start with. Bring some water.I did not get an exact measurement of how far it is but it will take you a while to get all the way up. It is very fast coming down. WATCH OUT though because the turns are blind. So keep your hands on the brakes. And there are hikers and other riders, so keep the speeds down. BE AWARE OF THE WILDLIFe (especially the lizardds on the road. Read the sign at the yellow gate just in case. Don't forget to check out the awesome view of Los Angeles, Glendale, Burbank and other cities if the sky is smog free.

Take the Glendale Freeway north to Mountain. Turn left off the exit, to Verdugo. Make a right onto Verdugo. Go on the left lane because it will fork. The name of the street that forks to the left is La Canada. Take La Canada to Colina. The street sign for snshine is very small, the only one you see clearly is Colina. Make a left (going west). Verdugo park should be on your left before you turn. Take Sunshine all the way up to the stop sign at Polaris. After the stop, start looking for parking on the right. The trail starts about a 100 yards from the stop sign. You'll probably have to go through the yellow gates that are shut.

Heavy traffic, hikers and riders, mostly beginners. One of many inter-connecting bike trails in the Verdugo's.

Customer Service

Take Verdugo Rd. to Colina (L), turns into Sunshine Dr.. park at the bottom and ride to thru pass the gate.
