Bug Springs - Trail, Tucson, Arizona

Bug Springs - Trail, Tucson, Arizona

DESCRIPTION

11 miles up the Catalina Highway, in Bear Canyon 3rd parking lot on right. Bug Springs Trail begins with a 1/2 mile hike up to the ridge, very steep. Once there the trail rolls and drops into a oak, pine forest. You'll ride thru small creek crossings, narrow ledge singletrack and enjoy the shade for over a mile. Next is an exposed section with rock hoodoos and then descending the ridge back to the Catalina Highway. Before the highway is a trail off to the left that takes you to the old prison camp, Gordon Hiribiaschi(sp?)and the trail can be extended to Molino Basin this way, making an 8 mile ride. Once hitting the camp ground road head right to the back of the campground. At about the 10 o'clock position on a loop at the back of the camp area the trail continues down to Molino Basin. From there you can continue down the mountain thru Milagrosa Trail making a 16.5 mile, much tougher, more tech ride.

this is a great trail! at both trailheads(upper and lower) there is pretty good climb right away, the upper a half mile hike-a-bike up endless steep waterbars. once the reach the top, it is a very fast and fun descent (very easy to skid in this area- please dont). after this descent, you go into a area of swooping, flowy, fast and very fun singletrack. in the middle there is one more hike-a-bike, steep water bars again, although possibly ridable if conditions are right. from there, it is mostly a fun fast descent, some exposure and the trail can be pretty narrow. great trail, must ride if on mount lemmon.

Fun trail as an xc out and back if you have descent fitness (link it up with Prison Camp for a little extra mileage). The trail is a narrow finesse single-track that follows a ridge from Prison Camp to Bear Canyon. Going up I would label it as technical because the loose over packed surface can get slippery when its steep. On the way down its completely non-technical if ridden slow. But if you push the pace you need to be pay attention to maintain traction. Definitely a fun XC descent.

Also great views with a nice open rock face to take a break on. Sweet rock formations including an ET family.

Overall a great alternative to the typically rough and rocky Tucson trails.

Its probably not what you are looking for if you are trying link it up with a La Milagrosa downhill shuttle run.

Customer Service

Start at Molino Basin and hop on the prison camp trail. Go through the campground and pick up the connector on the left that dumps you on Catalina highway. Go across and pick up the start of Bug Spring. Keep going up, and remember that what goes up must come down.
