Arizona Trail Kiabab Plateau - Trail, Fredonia, Arizona

Arizona Trail Kiabab Plateau - Trail, Fredonia, Arizona

DESCRIPTION

Trail is beautiful singletrack in the forests on the Kaibab Plateau. Trail is fairly level since you go along the top of the plateau. Great views at East rim over the Vermillion Cliffs torwads Page. I cant believe this trail was not listed, I just happened to find out about it when I stopped at the Visitor Center. The trail ends at the GC Park boundary for now but ranger person says they are planning to open bike trail (really a sevice road) to the Kiabab Trail. Trail also goes north of US 89A to BLM road for about 15 more miles, maybe next trip. Be careful at the trailhead on the south on FDR 610, it is not as well marked as other trailheads. My wife got lost, actually went past the trailhead and I spent a shivvery night riding in the dark to find her. The elevation is about 8000 feet.

This may be the most beautiful alpine trail in Arizona open to bicycles. The sections north and south of the East Rim Viewpoint are in lush spruce, fir and aspen forest. When I tried riding it in early April a year ago, too much snow and downfall, now, late May clear. The sections around highway 89A are lower and more pine forest but that section is a 20.9 mile, 2000' descent to the Utah border.

East Rim Viewpoint out and back to the canyon's edge. East Rim view to 89A, 89A to Utah.

Just FYI, from the turnoff 1/4 mile from Jacob Lake, it takes about 6 miles of uphill riding (there is a small singletrack stint at the beginning), before you get to the singletrack trail. We were only able to ride about a mile of the singletrack before we had to turnaround. (had to get back to our kids) This trail is LONG, so will have to explore it again. Once we finally did make it to the singletrack, it was fun stuff - good singletrack. Just a pain to get to it though.

The trail has a few good single track sections but generally is a slow climb on double track road... Not very interesting to say the least. We road it this weekend and never saw another person out there. Will not ride it again though.

This is a fairly easy trail that winds through the pine forests on the Kiabab Plateau. There is not alot of climbing but you can generally just crank to get the pulse rate up. The elevation of the trail is 8000 feet plus so this is definetly not a winter ride.

Some nice views of the plateaus to the east down to the Colorado River canyon south of Page.

Go south from US 89A or start on other trailheads off AZ 67
