Bukit Kiara - Trail, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Asia And Pacific

Bukit Kiara - Trail, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Asia And Pacific

DESCRIPTION

Not so much one single trail as a trail network criss-crossing Bukit Kiara. This is a veritable mountain biking (and running) oasis smack in the middle of the KL-PJ cornubation. This trail network has about a dozen rideable trails (some only unidirectional) and about 4 or 5 more running trails, with one thing in common: SINGLETRACK. From the impossibly vertical and rocky Mondo Cool, the swoopy Ridge Trail to the quad-busting Twin Peaks, they are all singletrack trails that wind their way through this humid tropical ex-rubber estate and secondary jungle. Beware the mozzies and the occassional snake.

The trails that runs through Kiara hill is very technical and also punishing for beginners (like me). The climbs always leave me out of breath but once you get to the top, you have a plethora of trails to choose from ranging from the easy 2K loop to the bumpy ride at Flintstone's playground.

A good mix of trails all in one spot located very close to the city center. Most trails are being conscientiously maintained by the good folks of TRAKS and many other dedicated riders.

Customer Service

2K is a nice loop for beginner but there are many other routes going around the hill. The trails have been mapped but with the encroaching development some trails have been destroyed. :(

The closest one would be Kota Damansara Community Forest (KDCF), a rather short trail.

Next closest would be FRIM. As a forest reserve, the trails are located over a wide area. Trails that have been ridden Dream Trail, Pinus Peak and Steroid Hill. With the exception of Dream Trail, the other two are more like dirt road for vehicles but with lots of punishing uphill climbs.

Putrajaya Challenge Park. The furthest MTB trails from Kiara. Pretty much like Kiara I guess. Only been there once, so can't say much about it.

There are easy trails such as 2k. This is the one trail that most riders frequent as it has some small drops and gentle decent. Halfway it break to two routes. One that goes back up to the starting point and the other all the way down. Both ways you will lead you back to the starting route. Its favor as at the starting point there is a pavilion (pondok) that riders congregate to regroup with other riders to ascend to twin peak. Its roughly a 15 min climb for strong riders. From there you can either come down the down hill track, flintstone or opt for the long ride down to the village (kampung) which would take anywhere between 20-45 minutes. Its a single trail route which is has both easy and very technical loop back routes.

Customer Service

One must try to go up twin peak and come down through village(kampung) as you would hit a few different terrain with different level of difficulty. At first go it may look daunting but after a while its actually quite a good ride. On this trail to pump up the adrenaline, one must ride fast and hard to enjoy maximum excitement. Be careful as there is one part of the trail where the riders call it the 8 storey drop. this is where development encroachment has encroach to. Moreover, at this village (kampung) trail the riding terrain changes as its prone to soil erasion, fallen trees and thick long bushes which makes it evermore interesting. A trail that one must try if riding at Bukit Kiara. BEWARE!! One must enter the area with someone that knows the area Bukit kiara is 1500 acres in the middle of the city. Being at one of the highest peak 300m, you'll be lucky to find a landmark that tall to get your bearings. for added fun, join the group that rides Bukit Kiara at night

Wasteland is a good trail to explore. Really narrow single trail which would test your ability especially of you're on clips and lots of snakes to avoid though there. As a matter of a fact they are very shy and tend to hide rather than confront us.

What can I say? In my opinion Kiara has more fun per square meter than almost anywhere I've ridden, and that includes places like Australia, Utah and British Columbia. Tight, rooty, rocky, twisty, swoopy, heart stopping, lung busting, thigh burning - it offers a little of everything for the intermediate or expert rider. I've been riding it off and on since 1995 and it still rocks. It's one of the prime reasons I stayed in Malaysia 5 years when I only intended to stay for one, and why I came back again 3 years ago. Sure, the souless scum property developers keep nibbling away at the edges, the illicit rubber tappers leave their rubbish everywhere and the mosquitos are straight from hell, but the trails are as good or better than ever. Whether you are picking your way through the baby's heads of Rock Garden, having your 'roids buffed on Mondo Cool, fighting to keep your heart rate from going ballistic on Pondok to Pondok or fangin' it down Boner or Penchala, it's all good.

Customer Service

I hate to pick favorites, Kiara currently has 20 km's of pure singletrack to choose from (although it's not really possible to string it all together in one go, some day I'm going to try). Here's a combination that will give you a workout you won't forget for a while: Plan C, Rumpy Pumpy, Boulder, Snakes and Ladders, 2k, 4k, Upper Carnival, Shriner's Convention, Twin Peaks, Janie's Addiction, Clenched Sphincter, Lightining Ridge, Lower Penchala. That's 12 km's and 750 meters of ascent. It will take you anywhere from 2 to 5 hours depending on your ability and trail conditions.

Frim offers excellent trails for beginners. Intermediate riders can get a feel for real Malaysian jungle riding at Batu Dam, and if they are looking for longer rides should try something like Teretak Tekala or the PCC Presidential Route in the Seminyih Area. For an epic Malaysian jungle ride, try Pusu to Kemensah.

I've ridden extensively in Peninsular Malaysia but have yet to find trails that compare with the "technical" nature of these in Bukit Kiara, only 15 minutes' ride away from my house in Damansara Heights.

The "Rock Garden" is a relentless descent into Taman Tun strewn with baby's heads rocks and 3 or 4 switchbacks.

"Twin Peaks" is a cleanable climb from the Taman Tun side, rewarded with a tight switchback-laden section into the saddle of the hill. Beware of the drop-offs at the very apex of one of the switchbacks.

Mondo Cool. Well, it has to be ridden at least once, even if you have to go to hospital after. It has become scarily rocky recentlycan you clean it?

Penchala. Best ridden from the top of Pondok-to-Pondok through Pat's new connecting trail.

All these trails require a minimum level of fitness to overcome the initial climbs, but those who perservere are rewarded with such sweet and technical singletrack that you will wonder why you would ever want to ride elsewhere.

A tip of the helmet to "Pigpen" Pat, whose endless and selfless toil we enjoy.

Customer Service

String together your own ride in this trail network, but for a start I would recommend climbing up Twin Peaks from the Taman Tun side until its saddle, turn left onto Mondo Cool, try and clean Pondok-to-Pondok and finally turn left past the second pondok down Pat's new connection to the Penchala trail. This will spit you out by the stream in Segambut Dalam.

None in urban KL or PJ. (The Bukit Lanjan trail reviewed elsewhere in this site is a joke: it's a road ride, for goodness sakes! There is a singletrack behind Bukit Lanjan, but this had been badly affected by the new Phileo housing development. The only other "urban park" type trail I would recomment in the Klang Valley is the park opposite the Klang Hospital on the Banting Road (beside the mosque and graveyard). Good singletrack, but can be quite crowded with walkers doing their evening Tai-Chi.

KIARA IS FUN. It takes a bit over 1 hour and it's like playing a SEGA game. Pure adrinaline and concentration. If you ride it you have no time to reach for drinking bottles. The ride takes you along jungle single tracks, tracks that are just spaces between trees, steeeep downhillaaaahhhs and beuatifull rivers. Once you get a hang of it, you don't ride Kiara, you surf it.

Customer Service

To follow the trail is easy... singletrack all the way BUT you will get lost. A map is available at BikePro or you can contact me if you need a guide. Note; I tend to bite once junglebound. Most weekends groups are gathering at Sri Hartamas to Ride Kiara. If that does not help; Follow the tracks. In short. Follow the trail and it will be fun, even if you get lost.

This is my playground. Bukit Kiara consists of a network of technical singletracks filled with hard climbs and steep descents over roots, ruts, rocks, etc. During the dry season, you can ride the entire trail. Beware of mosquitoes and the rare encounters with snakes.

Customer Service

The trail is accessible from Desa Sri Hartamas, Taman Tun Dr. Ismail, Penchala and Segambut Dalam. The easiest is to ride up from the Taman Tun Jogger's Track until you reach the crossroads. The is a trail to the left of the crossroads. The other alternative is to take the trail behind the Garden International School. A map of Bukit Kiara is available at www.communityzero.com/spokesworld. On the weekends, you can find the regulars gathering at Devi's Corner in Desa Sri Hartamas at 8:30am before going hitting the offroad.

I love this series of trails and Pigpen Pat's (yet another one), Snake and Ladders is a real joy to ride. Yet to get enough guts to go thru a few hairy sections. Sufficient ups and downs, and drops, and sharp corner, and... and... well, simply put, a joy to ride. Unfortunately, 'development' is slowy creeping into the MTB haven.

Customer Service

Start the ride from Devi's corner sidem, i.e. from Mont Kiara side. Don't eat too much before the ride as the trailhead it self is heart pumper.
