Cow trails - Trail, Kenting, Taiwan, Asia And Pacific

DESCRIPTION

Mainly open fire road but very long by Taiwan standards. They are all cattle tracks. But there are a few drop offs here and there. The main trail lasts for about 4Km and is a steady climb up all the way. It weaves its way behind the big rock that dominates the Kenting skyline. There are some different trails that seem to dissappear further inland but I had no time to explore those. The ride back down is a blast. The surface is a mainly stone and so stays fairly well drained though after heavy rain some areas would be unridable.Basically all of the Kenting Park has some interesting bits and you'll just have to go out there and find them.Once back in Kenting relax on the beach or check out Didi's for some delicious Thai food.

The biggest thing to remember about this entire area is the heat factor! Southern Taiwan is just a little south of the Tropic of Cancer and the weather can be very harsh there for riding most of the year. Most trails have no tree cover and burning up and getting heat stroke is quite possible if not properly hydrated. Either ride early mornings or late afternoons. For the most part, the trail can be summed up as fun, but far from epic. Going down appeared at first to be a hell screamer, but turned out there were lot's of flat sections too which prevented flowing connections. Previous post said it was a long trail by Taiwan standards. I would most certainly have to disagree with that statement.

Followed same route as previous post. Trail/ trails weave up with fun little technical tid bits thrown in along the way. (drop offs, jumps etc..) Appears that the trail ends 4/5 km up. With more time you could probably find a way to Julueshui from the top of the hill.

An overnight bus from Taipei will take you straight to Kenting. Buses are equipped with lazy boy style chairs and are quite comfortable. Bus depot is close to Taipei main train station. Tickets are $850 NT ($ 26 US) Bus ride depends on traffic. Usually takes about 7 hours one way. while in Kenting, stay at the Catholic Hostel. (08-886-1540) It's clean, cheap, and there is ample room to fix/fine tune your bikes on the grounds of the hostel. It's located right in the middle of the town. Didi's warung is the call for dinner. Epic food. Hit the beach too.

The burning sun will fry you if you choose a late morning start, so leave early and enjoy the crisp air and cooler climes. Mostly dusty climbing but little pockets of 'fun parks' where you can jump and drop to your hearts content. The previous poster mentioned the lure of epic downhill action not coming to fruition. Pretty true. Unless you like to pedal like crazy the DH back to town will disapoint. That said, if you packed up nice and early and wanted to explore the trials this is a worthy ride.

Ride this trail if you like exploring and supreme ocean and mountian views. Happy trails.

Pretty much anywhere in the area is worthy of riding, just look out for herds of cattle and blind s-bend corners. Take a first aid kit and go easy on the front brakes! :)
