Youth league, adult clothing

I just registered my 5th grade son for the local XC team, one of the requirements to race is a $50 team jersey. Clicked on the link for the store and there are no youth options available. I emailed the league and this is the response I got: "We do not offer youth sizes based on the minimums that we need to have for our Custom Clothing."

A youth MTB league won't order enough custom jerseys to justify youth sizes, but I can order a mens XXL. It doesn't make any sense!?!?!?!?

Any idea what vendor they are using?

Sizing can be an issue for kids racing for sure, while most NICA teams are buying products that come in adult sizes, you get some younger kids (especially middle school devo, etc) that would fit better in youth sizing. Most vendors do offer some custom product with youth sizes, but as the league folks in your case pointed out, there can be issues with minimums.

In a lot of cases, a 2XS adult jersey is going to be pretty darn small and might fit the bill, though.

Our company Hyperthreads has youth sizing in a couple models and no minimum requirements (although volume and pricing affect each other in most cases of course). What league is it?

It's New England Youth Cycling and they are using Craft. It looks like they are going with a standard jersey for the league which then gets customized with a team logo and they are available down to an XS, which according the size chart is a 33-34.5" chest for mens and 31" chest for womens. My 10 year old son has a 26.5" chest.

I guess I just don't understand why you would offer adult XXL jerseys but not something appropriately sized for kids? They've got $150 adult insulated jackets and $200 adult parkas with league branding, but nothing kid sized! Just get some kids sized tech tees printed up, they're only doing six 1 or 2 lap races throughout the season they really don't need riding jerseys.

All I got from the league director is that jerseys are required for racing, no jersey, no race! For my kids' competitive ski team the uniforms are optional and they actually changed supplier at the last minute when they realized the first choice didn't offer jackets small enough for half the team members.

The local team around here (Central MA Chain Reaction) seems to have figured it out.
Maybe someone from your team could reach out to Jeff or Erin and ask where they got these.

Matching team jerseys being mandatory is going to be a common thing for cycling leagues like yours. It looks like the league covers grade 5-12 so the bulk of the kids probably will fit into adult sizes. And coaches and parents are going to buy the jerseys to some degree as well, hence the full adult range being offered. Coaches and volunteers in the pits or feed zones need to be clearly marked so they'll wear team gear.

A little surprising they don't have at least a 2XS size offered.

I've volunteered to be a coach and I asked about team jerseys and was told we don't need them, if we volunteer at races/events we'll get event T shirts to wear?
My team used Jakroo. The MTB jersey wasn't too expensive when we ordered enough to get the discount and they had youth sizes. Their design tools are really cool too.
