I hope this guy gets nailed to the wall for assault and reckless indifference.
it’s obviously not most ebikes, but this is a VALID topic of ‘unintended consequences’.
please don’t delete.
this IS mtb and ebike related!
We all know it’s not the bike but the rider, but this needs to be discussed.
I am not editorializing, just pointing out an event that happened.

First off… you should not remove the helmet of a head or neck injury unless it was causing other harm.

That said, this was not an ebike but an electric motorcycle. Still I’ve had near collisions with guys who ride their ebike up a very popular downhill route full turbo at 20 mph. I’m not anti-ebike, they are a part of the sport now and definitely help those who may not be able to get out there without assistance. However, there’s no reason you need to go 20 mph uphill on a mtb trail. Assist should be capped at 12 mph. This would allow lighter mtb as well. If you can go faster on your own than so be it.

It’s ebike related because it is a ‘slippery slope’, many riders are modding, and many riders are rationalizing use ‘because it’s not a motorcycle‘.
it’s the elephant in the room.
I am still getting one, FWIW.
But this needs to be discussed, whether or not it’s ‘uncomfortable’ or not.
it is stuff like this that will simply get ebikes, or worse, all bikes, potentially banned.

getting one and still don't know the difference between a electric motorcycle and an electric bike? thank you for continuing to be a part of the problem...

Oh, I know the difference, that’s obvious in my post.
But what I do isn’t the point here, nor what you do.
It’s what fvcksticks like this do, and it is affecting other trail users.
Other mountain bikers, and other ebikers.
Modding an ebike is easy.
ignoring that this is a reality is part of the problem, too.

SirDumbAssRon Its a full on motorcycle powered electrically. It is not an assisted bike, it is not a bike, it should not now or ever be allowed on bike trails. The slope is clearly defined. People need to speak up when they see SirDumbAssRon on bike trails...

LOL, sounds like your obsession is defending it…

There is a local guy here poaching everything he can on ebikes and a sur-Ron, he is a lawyer, and wants a fight to take to court. It is all the same to him.

it is a threat to our fragile advocacy, and he just thinks ‘it’s a bike’.

Rideit- I don't like your post because it seems to go for sensationalism like so much current media like CNN.

You talk about a slippery slope with modifications like you're concerned about e-bikes but that's a freakin MOTORCYCLE, not an e-bike. Even a modified e-bike requires pedalling and won't draw the ass-hat crowd of that guy. That was a freakin' motorcycle... did you see the seat on that thing? No e-bike ever would have such a douche riding up a downhill trail. I think every e-bike owner is a previous bicyclist and know how things work on up/down trails.

I'd say close this thread. What are you trying to do... get the entire trail closed down because govt feels it's too hard to figure out the details? We don't want that. If it's open to bicycles only, then PEDAL bike, whether assisted or not. If motorcycles aren't allowed on that trail, then throw the book at the motorcycle rider but that bike was a motorcycle... whether electric motor or gas motor it was a motorcycle and if that trail isn't open to motorcycles then he was breaking the law and that's the problem, not e-bikes. (I don't even have an e-bike but I think I'd like to have one by the time I'm 55 years old but I know I won't be a hazard! I ride dual-sport motorcycle too but don't ride on mtb trails with it so not everyone is an ass-hat.)

EDIT- Sry Rideit that came off really strong. But I look forward to an e-bike later and think I'd love it and know I wouldn't hurt trails and worry a lot about trail access. So I worry about things getting unfairly described.

One more lame attempt to make ebikes look bad, this unfortunate accident was a mt. bike vs motorcycle. Just because the motorcycle is electric does not make it an ebike. Trying to use the rational that some people have de-restricted their ebikes, does not make the motorcycle an ebike. It's a slippery slope when someone calls an electric motorcycle an ebike, because some people don't know the difference. Someone who has 6,292 posts on MTBR should know the difference, apparently not.

you should go read this part of this forum's posting guidelines:

"· If you cannot tell a difference between a motorcycle and class 1 or 2 ebike, please don't post. "

And then never post.

Is it possible to get ran over by an enduro bro bombing downhill with no bell and suffer a broken jaw? I only ask because I was under the impression that speed limited pedal assist ebikes, like the Orbea Rise, Specialized Levo, etc. only provided an advantage on the uphill? Can the Orbea Rise be compared to the bike in the article?

Nice try OP.

Ok, apparently this is the Ostrich forum as to what the public perceives ebikes to be.
(and most perceive a nearly silent bike going 20-50 mph to be an e-bike, regardless of what it looks like, or is technically called)
Policy will follow public perception, in most cases.
You aren’t doing yourselves any favors by shouting this reality down, amigos.
See you on the trails!
carry on, I’m out.

So when are you going to start a troll thread about all the pedal bikes who ride the closed/illegal trails daily? You know the trails that have a sign posted “Do not enter” Any thoughts or concerns about them getting all mountain bikes banned, or do you just have a fetish towards electric motorcycles?

I've seen these at a local mtb park but didn't know what it was until now. I didn't know what I was looking at, all I knew was the bike had no pedals and it was going uphill faster than I would've gone downhill.
