Nice! I picked up a Spot Gen4 this summer after my wife got worried while I was out on a pretty remote ride, taking quite a bit longer than I said I would. That InReach looks like it will fit in a pack much easier than my bulky Spot lol

They work great if you have an open sky, but if you are under tree cover, you won't get a message out very well. Mine will try to send a message for an hour and never connect unless I find a good open spot and stopped, made it kinda useless for tracking. One thing I wished it could do is send texted to people not already loaded in the inreach, so if I needed to send a message for someone else on the trail I could do that without my phone.

You sure your GF isn't just trying to track of you? You sure you don't have a tracking device under your car?

Nice! Santa put an InReach Mini under my tree last year. It is a bit of added comfort having that connection on remote back country rides.

Wow that mini is super mini. I like the increased functionality of the older larger in reach: can text to any phone number (not sure of other limitations of mini) but as long as you can send a custom text you could always ask someone saved in your contacts to reach out to others in the case of helping a stranger in an emergency. I will probably get a mini if mine ever needs replacing.

I understand that you can use the Mini alone for custom texting but I need not point out the pain of scrolling through the alphabet and choosing one letter at a time, on a ridiculously small screen. I think most use their cell phone for this, on a BT connection.

I think I will get the full blown expedition plan for a month or two to learn how to use, in the wild. After that though, I will likely scale way back and use the Mini more for an SOS beacon than anything else. Who knows though. I will see how things unfold and go from there. I may really like it for texting.

You can have a bunch of quick texts that you can load on so I haven't found the need to scroll the alphabet. I used the recreation plan for the tracking, but then dropped down to the safety plan. Most of my texts were to myself to see if it could actually connect

The most use my inreach gets is when my wife travels and spends a lot of time on back country roads with no cell coverage. The tracking come in handy then and she can get help if needed

I will probably wind up with one of those for CYA purposes.

My understanding of this model is that you can easily send a few canned messages on the device itself, but that custom text messages are much better done through your phone.
