XTR shadow derailleur carbon cage replacement

Has anybody replaced a carbon cage on an XTR shadow derailleur?? Mine was recently shrapnelized and I'm finding the bolt holding the pulley cage on there is really tight. is it just a matter of reefing on it harder or am I missing something ??

Reef away

I have the XTR shadow and replaced my pulley bolts with ti bolts. I had to reef on mine pretty good, as they had the red loctite material on them and it takes a little muscle to break the bond. No problems getting the bolts undone, though.
ok, got it apart without too much trouble. the 5 mm bolt was loctited on there but wasnt too bad once the remains of the cage was clamped in the vice.
Have you priced the carbon cage replacement? My jaw dropped when I found out the price. I have been toying with the idea of replacing the carbon cage with a new Saint Shadow cage (810 model) as it has a similar design at the XTR Shadow but I'm too afraid to make the purchase, only to find it doesn't work.
I had mine covered through my bike sponsor... i would've rather replaced it with an Al cage though since it would be stronger.
Do what I did and just get an XT. My XTR broke within the first month and I got a new XT for $80.
I doubt it. For what it's worth I can't tell a difference between the two as far as shifting quality.
yes it will with some surgery on the XT outer cage, inner is a bolt on

The outer cage on XT 772 is retained with a long grub screw. The XTR 972 outer cage is bolted on. Very different methods.

fsrftc, how much surgery? Can you explain what you had to do?

Thanks

sure, basically all I had to do was remove the fixing pin that is pressed into the cage, then drill it out just enough to push the collar that the XTR had into it, you want tight fit, so make sure you don't drill too big of a hole
If anyone wants to try that conversion, I just replaced my XT shadow long cage and would let it go cheap. :)
how much do you want for it? I've learned my lesson on the carbon cage.
How would I go about removing / replacing the outer cage on an XT M772? I don't see any screws holding it in place? I have an XTR with a broken carbon cage also and would like to replace the cage on it with the aluminum cage from the XT (or just buy a new aluminum XT cage.)
Hey guys!

Read all the thread but couldn't find out....where did you guys saw the xtr cage for sell? I broke mine and would need to replace it. A xt cage would be fine too if i can get it but i just cannot find it for sale anywhere..

Thanks!
