I'm thinking of going with the Jones H-bar...Jeff (Jones) highly recommends using the shimano dual control shifters with the H-bar due to the fact that you can shift from most of the hand positions offered. My question is, if I go with the dual contol levers...can I use the discs from any other manufacturer? or am I going to have to use a shimano disc brake set up. FYI, I was leaning towards the Magura Marta SL as brakes.

You've gotta use the Shimano brakes... Which isn't neccesarily bad.

Maybe with another Mineral Oil Based System???

Sorry, your going to have to use Shimano Brakes. But I do wonder if you can use another Mineral Based disc brake system with the Shimano Dual Control. Has anybody tried this?

I'd try the dual controls out before going with them. I liked the idea since it works great on road bikes, but I don't care for it on my MTB since I tend to pull up sometimes down on my levers while braking, so as soon as I start pedaling it skips a gear or two. That and I haven't had a problem shifting while braking since I use the middle finger for that.

There is a dual control for V-brakes which you could then use any mechanical brake with, but I don't think you could use any hydro with them (definately not any DOT, though there may be some other mineral oil brakes that MIGHT work but I wouldn't count on it!)

Try asking Magura and Hope they might know. I dont see why either wouldnt work if they came with the proper seals for mineral oil instead of the DOT stuff. Other then also needing the proper parts to attach the hoses to each end.

You'll have to use Shimano brakes. It might work to use other calipers assuming you have the right seals but it's a gamble. You don't know if the fittings will be compatible. The fluid might be a different viscocity and there might be master cylinder incompatibilities. Hope calipers however are compatible with them if you buy a mineral oil seal kit for them. Both Shimano and Hope share the same master cyclinder design so it works. I wouldn't see any reason to do this unless you already happen to have a set of Hope Mini's and don't want to buy new brakes. There's not much that would make the Marta's or Hope's really any better to justify going through so much trouble and expense. The other option is to go with the cable brake version and use any mechanical disc.

for use with h-bar, the xtr hydros master cylinder will significantly get in the way of the front hand position. Xts are worse. You can chose to hold the master cylinder using that position but there isnt room to grasp with whole hand (maybe 2 fingers)
