I have notice a few pics posted of people removing the bashguard and cutting off the ends of the spider where the big ring mounts from XTR cranks. I like the clean look of it and should save around 100 grams or more. Does this affect the stiffness or strength in any way? Thanks!

It would have no effect on stiffness or strength. Those portions are outboard and cannot leverage.

It is pretty easy to do, and you can get 102mm chainrings for it from tomicog.

They were fairly new in the photo taken a couple years ago. As far as Boone selling them currently, I have heard yes AND no. My chainring shown here is still just like brand new, and I have a TON of miles on it. Here is a linky..

You can make a 104mm bolt ring work if you are creative. I think the XT cranks work much better than XTR imho. I have a pair of each....
