how much have the xtr components changed through the last few years? i am thinking of buying a 1999 jamis with full xtr, and was wondering how much "better" the new parts are compared to these six year old parts. I know the finish is flat gray on the old ones and the new ones may have an extra gear, but these parts have no wear whatsoever, no dirt either... so let me know anything you can please.....

1999 was the first year for nine speed so it should just be the M952 series XTR. It was (and still is) a great setup aside from the 9 speed downgrade from the previous generation. The 1999 XTR cassette was improved later but the rest of the group should be fine. The latest XTR stuff is astonomically expensive and only nominally better. If it's a good deal, go for it. You may consider switching out the wheels and brakes for discs though.
