I have XT V-brakes (BR-M750)
and i have very big problem with very loud squeeling :-(

I use standard XT cartrige brake shoe,wiht Ritchey Rock Pro rims.

I'v tried 'toeing' the shoes,but it doesnt help,
whan the pads touch the rim completly,
on hard braking,thay squeel again.

Who to solve the problem? Changing pads? Wich one's?

Does Shimano have some pads that will fit XT V-brakes,
but wont squeel,maybe XTR or new Deore cartrige brake shoes?

I think everyone has had problems with those brakes. I was given 2 pairs from a "friend" at work about 3 years ago. I figured that I was running a rigid fork and his front brake squeeling problem might have to do with suspension fork flex. Well they ran alright for about 2 or 3 months in the summer but after the 1st or second ride in the wet weather they (especially the front) would not shut up!! Even after I cleaned the rims and pads and toed in the pads and rode in drier conditions they would still not shut up.
I think the real problem with the xt v brakes is in the parrallel push design, the bushing or pivit points of the parrallel push design get a little loose, and then they vibrate when the brakes are applied, no matter what type of pads you have or whatever zenlike state you have tried to get yourself into while toeing in pads and cleaning rims. I think you can buy a shimano v-brake re-build kit w/new little parts, which might work, or you might just want to unload them on a "friend" and get some better brakes. A 1999 or older XT v-brake works pretty well, I have two pair and you can't have them!!

I gave up

trying to stop the dreaded XT brake howl after toeing in, out , sanding , cleaning, different pads, and two bike shops. The brakes were included in an XT build kit, and both LBS mentioned this is a common problem.

Switching to Avid SD7s stopped the insane noise and seemed to be at least as powerful with better modulation and much lighter.

Hej

The brakes came with my bike.
I plan to pass it to a "friend" ;-) i want to sell it cause,
there is so much things i want to change on it,
so its beter to buy a new bike.

Ofcourse i will swich to hidraulic disc's.

But,till the bike is with me,and when selling time comes,
i would like the brakes not to squeel.
Buying new brakes for the bike i want to sell,seams not logical to me.

As the pads are almost gone,i'll try useing diferent tiype of pads.

Does somone tryed CoolStop pads on squeeling XT's?
Or Ritchey pads?

i saw allso some "Jagwire" brand cartridge pads,are thay eny good,
i never heard of them before,but the price is at the level as shimano xt-xtr pad cartridge.


Schice of brake pads on Serbian market is really slim,
and mostly comes down to Shimano.
CoolStop if i'm lucky ..

I had the same problem with my XT v-brakes...They were a much needed improvement over my old avids, but they squealed all the time. I switched the stock shimano pads for KoolStop's (the red one's) and I haven't even changed them in over a year...the only squeal I hear is when the rims are wet. They seem to last a long time with great stopping power...BTW I weigh about 210 and I think the XT's are a great v-brake!

Very strange thing had happend

Squeel stoped!
And this is how:

Last weekend i putted on my lowrider rack on the front,
and attached a par of panniers,
and they had about 1kg of load each.

And i started to brake,and it wasnt squeling at all !?
I was trying to provoke it,but it remained silent.

Note that lowrider rack attaches to the fork legs only,
and it has no phisycal interference with the brake whatsoever!

But when i removed the rack,the squeel got back again.

Hmm...???

Did i mention ..

Did I mention that it was like i was useing them for the firs time.
I braked realy HARD for the first time,
and boy O boy,do they BRAKE! or what!

Fantastic brake force even really loaded bike!

I think I solved a problem !

Hej

Playing with my noisy brakes the other day,
i remembered the "loose pivot point" issue.
I'v noticed that front one has more "play" then the back one(when pulled in front-back direction),
naturraly - the front takes a lot more force,and espacialy gets more "twisted"
with toeing the pads,so i dont think they shoud be toe'd at all !
If they are sopposed to be,i guess the manufecturer woudnt say "make it pararel with the rim".
And btw,toeing didnt make the squeel go away.

So - I swaped front and rear,and mirracle,
it stoped squeeling !
So the loose bushings and pivot points might be a cause of squeeling.
Of course i think that Richey pads or KoolStop's shoud be used no matter if it is noisy or not.

But enyway,"pass them on to a 'friend' " was a good idea,
so i sold the bike.
From now on,i'll be braking with my new Magura Louise FR )))

Interesting..

What I've found works with the XTs is, hold the brake tight against the rim with the lever, undue the pad nut, shake it a bit with the allen wrench then torque it down. Never squeeked again and set the pads perfectly.
