with XT thumbshifters? I'm using an 8 speed cassette 11-28 and a single front chainring.

Indexed thumbies or non indexed? If they're indexed, no, if not, than they'll work with pretty much everything.

Indexed Will Work Fine

The shifter doesn't care what derailleur its attached to.
As long as the shifter and cogset match it'll be fine.
And on that note Campy and Shimano shifters and cog spacing play pretty well together in the 7 and 8 spd era.
