Can I use a new 9 speed XT rear Derailluer with older 8spd shifter pods ?
Is this also true for 7 speed derailleurs, or do they not travel enough (even with limit screws maxed out) to reach all nine gears?Hecubus said:8 speed and 9 speed derailleurs are one and the same rapid rise or high normal. The total cassette spacing for 8 and 9 speed is the same and since the indexing is performed by the shifter the derailleur has no impact.
Understood - I thought maybe the parallelogram of the 7 speed rear might be too short for the as-yet-unthought-of additional width of the 8/9 speed cassette.wddamf said:The derailleur doesn't know what travel it is - it just does what the shifter cable tells it to do - so they all work on all cassettes. The shifter makes the decisions.
