Hey guys,where can I get a rebuild kit? I cant get the left pistons to
work right. Two got stuck,I fixed it,cleaned and put a few drops of
oil on them. Put it all back together but cannot get them shimmed right.
No matter what I do,the rotor will rub. Everthing is working fine,other
than two pistons coming out more than the other. I have had these brakes
for years, this is my first problem with them. Funny thing is 2 mounths back
my Rear Brake did the exact same thing,only the above worked fine. Hence
the rebuild kit. Those new Saints are lookin real proper. Peace.

As far as I know, there are no official rebuild kits. You could
a) try to locate some quad rings trough a hardware store

b) lube them once again, pump the sticky pistons out really a good bit and try to turn them,
hard to explain, just grab them with something and turn them a bit. Should work.
Maybe you need more oil :D

The new Saints look really good though. Could be that they´ll be a bit noisy though ;)

Alright,I'll do it all over again as I did not turn them,that might work.
Thanks for the info. Why do you think the Saint's could be noisy Znarf?

Mere speculation and the following: ;)

Cam from nsmb.com mentioned that they seemed a bit loud on a test ride. He´ll post a preview soon.
And in the Shimano "proving ground" video, where the new Saints are ridden by a famous rider, you can hear them squeal really loud everytime he brakes.

But that could be just coincidence and NOT reflect reality (I hope so =) )

4pots in general seem to be more prone to squealing, because it is more difficult to calculate for vibration and so on with the 4 pistons...

Funny you should say that.

I did see the video of Vandy,and I did notice the squealing. The first
thing I thought was the Product Mnger. set them up on Vandy's squish,
so they must have been setup right. The second thought I had was the
extreme Dust and how steep that hill was. That Video does no justice
to the extreme knar of that hill,even though it looked incredible. My 4pots
will do that when I first grab them if the trail is Real Dusty,then it stops
as if it burned off? It does not last long at all,and only with extreme dust
or water of course. I have a set of Saints of my DH Bike. I dont think I
can tell you which I prefer. They both are great. However,the DH bike comes
in a 54 pounds,and the Hardtail at 38. One could say you cant compare
those two,I might agree to that.

What I find amazing is that they are saying 50% more power with the new
Saints. I find that hard to believe,but I'm licken my chops. I'll wait,I have
more then one set of 4pots:thumbsup: . I want to fix these ones though,not
just slap on another set. I just got off work and now it's time to play ball.

What brake pads do you like best on your 4pots.

I have some original Shimano semi metallic and also some resin ones (also original Shimano).

They both seem to be a bit strange, braking power fluctuates a bit.
Sometimes when they´re hot they don´t stop that well, a couple of minutes later they bite well.

Sanded the rotors, cleaned the pads, they have NO oil or whatsoever on there.
The bleed is perfect, lever feel is absolutely constant. It´s just that it sometimes seems like they are a bit weak.

Probably really a pad issue..

I had several sets of Shimano discbrakes, a Deore 525 and also the original SAINT.

Neither of them had those issues, braking power was sufficient (not ultrastrong but nice modulation).


While it´s not a REAL issue, I feel that on my Freeride rig, the braking power could be stronger in some really extreme trail sections.

I almost bought a set of CODES, but l´ll wait for the new Saints. And just put the 4pots on my soon to be built cheapo XC hardtail. :)

:I know exactly what you are talking about. IMHO you need larger Rotors.
For me,at 230 pounds only the Rear Brake would do what you said above.
I went from 6" to 8" Rotor{rear only}as Shimy did not have the 170 yet. I then
had no more problems. When Shimy came out with the 170 Rotor,I bought it
and have been very happy. I needed another adapter as well,and it was a risk.
The 6" was not going to work for me in the rear,the 8" did but it was huge hardware
on my bike. I love the 170 Rotor,it's perfect.

I must add this. When I went from the 6" to 8" rear Rotor,I put on a GoodRidge line.
Rear Only on the GoodRidge. I had that Brake Pump on the Rear Only. I grab both
brakes at the same time for most of my riding. So to play it safe,I put on a 8" rear Rotor
and a GoodRidge line. BooYa,Proper!

Again,I would check out bumpin up the Rotor's,then ride her. It's about 75 dollars a
brake,but you might be happy on that FreeRide Rig. Last,I only clean the Rotor's,I
have never sanded the pads,sometimes I'll sand the Rotor. Peace.
