In trying to fit some Origin 8 Gary Bars to a frame I have, I figured out I need a 1 1/8" threadless stem 150mm reach with 50-60 deg rise. Does such a beast exist in a production stem? Steel or Alu is fine. Color not a big deal. Or is custom my only option?

I know there are several drop bar users on this forum so I figured this is as good a place as any to ask. X-post to VRC and Singlespeed.

thanks in advance,

Well, that 150mm of "reach" seems like a lot. I usually measure that distance horizontally to the ground, so from handle bar centerline at the stem clamp to where it would intersect the steer tube axis.

Anyway..........most production stems are only going up to 40 degrees rise, so it looks like either you get a fork with a bit longer steerer to compensate using some spacers and a 40 degree rise stem, or go custom if a different fork is not an option.

One thing you could check is VooDoo, who were going to have a special stem for their Nakisi monster-crosser and I thought it would be available through BTI. If it exists, that stem had mondo rise! Way more than 40 degrees. May be worth searching that one out.

LD stem...

Thanks GT

Really if I could get my hands on an LD stem, that would be perfect. Alas, they are rare and expensive, and won't work with a threadless steerer, but they are the perfect fit.

I will look into the voodoo, stem, thanks for the heads up. I already have a ridiculous amount of spacers under the stem and a 40 deg rise with about 90mm reach. That still puts the bar a few inches below the saddle. This frame may not be the best candidate, but I will figure something out. Maybe this can be the impetus for picking up a Karate Monkey, since I have been trying to justify that for a while! ;)

Voodoo Stem

I emailed Voodoo about the stem for the Nakisi, their response is below:

We are working on bringing that stem to market in Spring 2010.

Thanks!

John

Here is a link to the picasa album showing the Nakisi frame and the stem.

Looks like exactly what I need. Hope they can make it work for production. Seems like it would solve a lot of problems with offroad drop bar setups.
