Thats a subjective question as each persons taste varies
I like the S2 colour

dont mess around 2 or 3 at full power and a driver with dimming capabilities

"3x at third current" certainly is more efficient than "2x at half current". You get more lumnes (as lumens/current ratio is better at lower currents) and you consume less power (as Vf is lower at lower curents).

I run at full power for maximum throw.
I'd run at reduced power for a flood.

Like ortelius said, 3x is more efficient than 2x at same power consumption. But it's the color produced that's the question. I got me some 2T binned XML-s and they have some green tint at lower currents (like 50 or 100 mA) but at 3A or even 3.5A they are white, almost neutral.
