xc upgrades

1101 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Sedated
i'm looking to upgrade my drivetrain. currently i ride a cannondale f600. xt rear and lx front i believe. 2005 model.

i'm looking to upgrade to either th sram x0 or the xtr for the rear and i'm looking to upgrade my cassette and chain.

i xc race so weight is somewhat a factor. i'm just looking for some durable parts.

i would also like some suggestions on brake levers, the f600 came with crappy cannondales, would avid levers be stiffer? how about shifters, it comes with shimano deore which are on the low end. i'm looking to up to sram's top of the line or shimano top of the line.

money isn't really a problem. my work has pro deals so i get pretty much everything 50% off. i'm also looking into a fork, mayb the sid wc's but i hear they only truely have 67mm of travel and i would like to have at least 80..

would i be better off just buying a really nice hardtail and using my f600 as a training/school/work/beat down bike? i really like hardtails but i'm not sure if i want a cannondale hardtail lefty...

thanks, i know you guys recieve 100 of these posts a day, but help would be greatly appreciated.

my $.02

Nice bike, I used to own the same one. Heres my advice.

Don't touch the fork. The super fatty ultra DL is a great fork, plus using a converter to run a 1-1/8 steerer tube fork (rockshox, manitou, etc) would be a pain - expensive and not worth it. Plus that's a sub 3 lb fork.

You wont find much performance gain running nicer derailleurs. Those work great. I would look at a nicer wheelset or crank. I'm not a big fan of the deore shifter, I put LX on mine.

The 117/deore disc wheelset is pretty portly. going up to nicer hoops will save a ton of weight and not to mention amazing acceleration/handling on that bike. I would put a new XT crankset on there to save some weight and it will be very stiff. Those are probably the two areas where you will notice the biggest gains. Lastly I would look into a thompson post and a SLR or gobi Ti saddle. Hope this helps! :thumbsup:

Wheelset = Wheels (rims and hubs)
Portly = Fat/Heavy
Hoops = Wheels or rims

I'm sorry but I have to ask. Where do you work that you get pro deals without even knowing what a wheelset is?
Cheapest place to save weight = Tires

Then I would advise looking into Wheels
