XC Racing Internal Wheel Width?

8024 Views 19 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  NordieBoy
What is the ideal wheel width for XC racing? "24", "25" or "27" Internal Wheel width or does it matter? Looking at buying carbon wheelset for XC racing only? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks

What size tires will you be running?

24" or even 22" is fine for up to 2.3". If you plan on running 2.4" - 2.6" then a 25" or greater is needed to keep the proper form of the tire.
By: " I assume you're meaning milimeters. Well quite a few World Cup racers are using 30mm (internal not external width) rims with 2.4" tires. A wider rim is stronger, allows for lower pressures, and holds the form of the tire better. If you're buying new, I'd never go below 30mm these days. If you're not racing, 35-40mm internal width is great.

Personally, I wouldn’t purchase anything new less then 25mm.

I’d say anywhere between 25-30mm, depending on tire size and course severity.

2.25-2.35” closer to 25mm
2.4-2.5” closer to 30mm

I run 27id I9 wheels with 2.4’s on my geared bike and 28id new stans arch wheels with 2.4’s on my SS. The tire profile is perfect.

I did once try for a day 35id wheels with 2.4’s and the tire profile was ridiculous and dangerou.
As mentioned 25mm to 30mm is the norm. Which end you prefer really depends on the riding characteristics you are looking for.
Wider usually means more tire support but harsher ride. Narrower is lighter and more compliant but the tires squirm under high load.

Personally I don’t like 30mm for XC applications. I find them generally too stiff for my tastes in an XC wheel.
I like ~30 for the versatility in tire widths. Wouldn't' go below 25. If this was a dedicated race bike and I knew I would never run anything larger than 2.3" then I might go 25 for the weight. I might consider 25 in the rear and 30 in the front as a compromise.
I run 25mm with 2.25" tires. I chose that for the low weight since most of the 27mm+ rims from the carbon supplier were more burly layups and a big step up on weight. If I ran wider than 2.25" tires then it'd probably be worth the weight penalty to go wider.

25mm rear, 30mm front. I got a little extra cornering support from my 2.35 Barzo going to 30mm in the front.
29-32mm.
30mm works fine with some 2.25" tires. Some doesn't work because side knobs sit too far inboard by their tread knobs design on 30mm rim.
At least you have some choice for 2.25 tire if you want to run that narrow.
For internal rim over 32mm, none of 2.25" works as far as I know. You have to start at 2.35 and larger.

FWIW, Continental Race King 2.2s are marked on the sidewall as being for 21mm to 25mm rims. I'm running 17.5mm rims because old school 26" cross country rims are narrow, and there isn't much choice for going wider. No issue going too narrow except not being able to run really low pressures. Performance is fine in corners, and probably better than going wider than the spec due to the edge knob issue.
Thank you for all the responses- appreciate it!! Bike's main purposes will be for long distance endurance races. 2.2 tires to 2.4 tires.

I ran 25mm Flow EX rims on my Chameleon for XC racing.
WTB Freq Team i25's on the gravel bike and Anthem XC bike - heavy but bulletproof.

35mm. That wayif you don’t podium you can blame it on the heavy rims. :)

25-27 internal sound ideal for your use.
25 is plenty wide for 2.35" tires and lighter than wider rims. I see no need to go wider for XC racing stuff. 30 starts to get pretty damn wide and when you put on the narrower tire for faster/shorter courses the resulting tread pattern will not be idea. 30-35mm is enduro 2.3-2.5 tire width range IME. Yes, you can easily go wider with rims these days for plus tires, but IME, those only slow you down.

Nino has wheels to sell. The 2.4 aspens that Nino runs also measure 2.55 on my i30 rims. I wouldn't want to use those on i25 rims.

The courses they run are also a lot different (more technically challenging) than what I think the rest of us ride on.
I'd go 25-30mm and base it off of whichever was significantly lighter, cheaper or both.
