I've discovered a new riding area nearby which offers a mix of loose rocks, nice hard single-track and loose leaves - but it is wetter than I'm used to (the climate is the same, it just seems the ground always stays wet). As this area is on my doorstep I'll be riding this the most. My usual ride would be uphill on asphalt or fireroad, some up-and-down on a mix of fire roads and single tracks, and then some challending but not-too-extreme single track for the downhills. It's a mix of XC and (amateur) Freeriding.
I'm using a Continental Vertical Protection 2.3" up front and the Conti Escape Protection 2.1" on the rear, both at about 35 psi. The Escape Pro was sold as the 'perfect companion' to the Vertical Pro but I notice it's no longer on the Continental product line. My ride is a 2001 Specialized Enduro.
I rode a steepish downhill last weekend which was a mix of loose rocks, polishged wet rock and wet ground (not really muddy). The rear was sliding out all over the place! I noticed that the tyre is wearing out along the running edge (still knobs, but they are getting worn), but I was still surprise how little grip I was getting.
Am I riding at the right pressure?
Is this a suitable tyre for my riding?
What new tyre would you recommend?
