I'm in the market soon for some good XC brakes, but not sure what is very good for XC. I'm building a singlespeed, and definitely want non hydro discs, but don't really know what's out there. Any help?

If you are considering disc i would say Avid .

Which model would be very good? The only Avid mechs I know of are BB7's, and i've heard they are very heavy for XC use.

That would be them. Use the 160mm rotor size for XC. Im not a XC rider but i have used them & my son has raced DH with them. Avid makes the best cable disc you can get, the amount of minor weight? dont wory just ride & enjoy the nose wheelies, stopies .

I like the upper-end Avids quite a bit. They change names every year it seems like (so I'm not sure what they call them these days), but the upper end ones are light and work well. I've owned Avid Mags, TIs, Ultimates, and SD-7s and they all work great.
