I have the older G1 style caliper Hayes HFX Mag HD. My rear brake is messed up. When I grab the lever, there's pressure, and the pads grab the rotor, but if I hold the lever down, the pressure goes down, and the pads back off, this continues until the lever is all the way down to the bar, and at this point the pads just barely contact the rotor. If I let go of the lever and grab it again, the pressure is back momentarily before slowly backing off again. I'm not sure if it's just a pocket of air, but it feels as if fluid is leaking out somewhere, or forcing itself back into the master cylinder. Any ideas?

Air or the master cyl. is bypassing internally. Try bleeding it before repairing / replacing mc.

My $.02

Here is a copy-and-paste from another thread in this forum where I posted my experience.

Here's a couple things, based on my experience with my HFX-9 Carbons.

Did you try bleeding them to make sure there is no air in the system?

Another thing, my rear (not rear end!) had to be replaced under warranty since the lever needed to be pulled back way further than on the front, and twice I lost all rear braking for a few seconds during a ride. The shop said they tried bleeding them, and they would not take in any new fluid. They said it was a bad master cylinder for the rear and replaced it under warranty.

Hope this helps some!
