I got a used set of 27.5+ wheels and tires that I've been running on my hardtail. The tires are WTB Ranger 27.5x3.0 tires. They are light, roll well, and provide decent traction, except on roots. I'd like something grippier, but I think something like a Minion DHF/DHR2 would be way overkill. I was thinking of a set of 2.8 Rekons, and wondering if these would give some increased grip without adding much weight and rolling resistance. The rims are 44mm internal, so I think a 3.0 is ideal, but a 2.8 would probably work fine too. Any recommendations for 27.5+ 2.8 or 3.0 tire that would give good traction climbing on roots and rocks but still roll pretty well and isn't heavy?

2.8 works fine on those rims.

Go for it. Rekons are amazing. Very good traction for the weight. The 3C version is only 815 grams. As I and others have mentioned, the Kenda Booster is similar; it's 800 grams for the SCT 2.8. I didn't like the WTB Ranger very much. It was OK but the quality and longevity were pretty bad.
