Winter Riding

With the latest cold snap and snow appearing I was wondering if there is any other wacko's out there that are still riding?

I have NBS - New Bike Syndrome and Hodges is out my door. So my new FSR Expert 120 and I have been trail blazing the light snow and cold temps. Riding in the woods this time of year isn’t much different than X/C skiing. Dressed correctly it can be a fun experience and 100 times better than going to the gym.

I have an HID light and riding on the snow at night is awesome. The snow reflects the light making it light up the trail like a 100 watt system.

Anyone in the Hodges area want to do a night time winter ride let me know.

I'm still riding about 5 times a week about 10 miles a ride. Im currently riding beater bike (the one that is being sacrificed to the winter weather). The bike is a E303 mongoose a friend gave me a a fixer upper. For tires im riding maxxis wet screams. In total the bike weights about 36 lbs dry. The only problem Ive had so far is that the chain falls off alot since the snow seems to be taking off all the grease on my chain. Overall its been fun, its just not as fast as riding in the summer. And u dont get much for suspention since the fork doesnt really work at all (the oil probably gelled up). You should try riding in the winter its quite fun.
I'll ride until the snow is too deep. 3 to 4 inches isn't too bad. 6 gets real sketchy. Usually you can wait for a week after a snowing and the trails will have dirt exposure. A few years back when we didn't get any snow I rode year round. That was a good year. I live near Dogtown which is usually rideable when nothing else in MA is.
Usually 5-6" is the deepest I can go until it bites too much.
Bike set up - an old Klien hardtail switched over to a SS, duke air front shock, 2.3 and 2.4 wtb tires. I figure the simplier the better. The fat tires act like a small "shock". weight maybe 25 lbs.
Ride anytime it isn't raining. Snow is OK since it brushes off. Cold (20 and lower) - dress 3 layers (thin under shirt, heavy-er poly propelene and a bike shirt (to carry stuff) and a coat. .
Will use my knee warmers and heavy tights if real cold (20 and lower). Note this is also good for a 18mph road ride too so maybe overkill for a mtb ride but better a little warm than freezing. Especially if ya flat and are standing around for awhile.
Balaclava. carry heat packs for the feet. Sidi boats with additional cheap covers to stop water and wind. Camelback under the jacket. maybe even two sets of gloves.
But love it. Road Great Brook (Carlisle, MA) today and felt great. Definately better than the gym. Hope the info helps. :)

I live in the hodges area. I have been riding 3 days a week up untlil 4 days ago. We are getting 6 to 10 inches tommorow. If it turns out to be less or if it warms up I would be game. I have been night riding hodges (oxford Ma) since daylight savings time ended.

I've been riding. Rode to Boston and back two weeks ago when it was 15 degrees - wasn't cold at all.

Did a once-around of the MTB loop in the Fells Thursday, it was icy, but hopefully the warm temps of late will clear it up some more. I'm always looking for more people to ride with so drop me a line if you're local.

I'm sitting here waiting for daylite to break then I'm heading out on the hard packed snowmobile trials near the Upton state forest. When I can't ride in the woods I ride on the road. When there is really too much snow I bring out the XC skis. Winter is awsome because the conditions are always changing. The cold is only in your head.
There is a local club that rides whenever possible in the winter. They are located in central MA and ride at Hodges, Buffumville, Milford, Vietnam etc.... Check them out at www.teambums.com. Let me know if you want to check out some trails some time.
Hey Fred, I've been wanting to ride with someone for a long time. This time of year, everyone is waaay to lazy to drive 15min to a park for a ride. I'm in Lynnfield so Wake is close. Possibly this weekend....even though there is a large chance for bad weather. PM me if you're interested. PS, I was reading reviews of somthing and there was a guy from Wakefield who said his favorite place to ride was Breakheart.....was this you???? :D
