No price range. Temps 30s and 40s. I’m here in CA. As far as precip normal rain shower. Nothing crazy
I like a shell over a base layer, it breathes a little better that way. The problem that I run into every time is you need a significant precip rate to stay cool enough so you aren't sweating your ass off in "waterproof" clothing, but at those precip rates, the waterproof clothing usually doesn't stay waterproof for long. The nice thing about some shells is they have full side-zips, so they are easy to put on and take off, they also tend to be packable-size, so you can put them in a small frame bag, revelate feed bag, pack, etc., don't have to wear them the whole time. I just got back from continuous moderate rain over a 1:45 ride, 35 degrees.

Unless it's warm summer rain, it's damn hard to deal with continuous cold winter rain, just because the stuff that claims to be waterproof is not waterproof in significant precip rates and the stuff that claims to be breathable is not breathable unless you are standing still and not exerting yourself. I probably should have worn my vinyl jacket on this ride I just did, but I wore one packable waterproof jacket, then halfway through, when it was all soaked, I pulled the second one out and put it on over the first (base layer under the first one). In this rain it wasn't going to stay waterproof, but I was going to stay warm by trapping heat.

Some thicker leggings without waterproof layers can work over a wider temp range when it's not raining, like high 40s down to 20s and lower, but once you add that waterproof outer layer, breathability goes to crap.

For that temperature range in dry conditions I use trail pants such as those from Fox or Specialized on top of my knee pads. If there’s just a sprinkle of rain this setup works great.

If I'm expecting steady rain or puddles on the trail I grab my Endura MT500 Spray trousers. They're mostly waterproof and the fabric has a good feel. This model is supposedly more breathable than their Waterproof II trousers (I haven't tried those though).

I am a fan of Norrona gear, they have great fabrics, functional layouts and already for a long time focus on sustainable production.

For pants I use their fjora flex1 pants for temperatures from 3-10 degree Celsius, and the fjora Infinium when it gets colder than that. Under the pants goes a Merino baselayer from Icebreaker, and when it rains I put an Endura 3/4 rain pant on top of the Norrona pants.

I really like Dakine’s Thrillium pant. They use Schoeller fabric, and are well-designed. They’re great for park days, and I wore them most of last winter. It it’s snowing or deep I might layer bibs over them.

They’ve just brought out a winter version with heavier fabric and no vents. I ordered a pair and am looking forward to getting them. I’ll probably use them for Nordic skiing too.
