So, the snow is coming down, the bike is gathering dust, and your body is looking more like a pear after Christmas. You are doing some spinning or stationary workouts……but how fun can that be.

January 17 is your chance to change all that! A winter adventure race near Huntsville will give you an opportunity to use your mountain bike, snowshoes, and XC skis for a day of fun and challenge. However, you will need to be able to read maps and use a compass! What's unique about this race is that you can choose which ckeckpoints to tackle and what mode of transportation to get there. Therefore, if you aren't into XC skiing, you can just use your bike with snowshoes attached to a backpack.

The race will be held in the Frost Conservation Park where there are lots of trails, SUV roads, lakes, and great scenery!

See http://www.far.on.ca/2009/winter/index.php for details.

***** As at Thursday, Jan. 8 ********
Race has been cancelled due to low enrollment numbers

Right Here--->

Hi Rick, there are packages at the Frost Centre -

As a heads up:

Weekend $140 (2 nights, 2 breakfasts, Fri dinner)

Each night $50 (night & breakfast)

Fri dinner $25 (incl app, salad, entrée, dessert, drink)

Thanks!

I saw this in the fall, something I wanted to try, but the location wasn't announced and not having skis or snowshoes, it fell from my mind. Frost center is however just up the road from the Family cottage, and I've spend a bit of time hiking, biking and paddling in there. If I had known earlier, I think I could have convinced myself to give it a whirl and found the equipment.

Yea, that was my thought. I also love that area from two school trips and a couple of family day hikes.

Too bad numbers are too low. :(

Sorry folks......I just got informed that the race has been cancelled.....CRAP.

Apparently the numbers were too low, and I suspect because adventure racing is just too expensive for some people due to the recent economy.

Geoff has promised to push up the marketing much better next year to get better attendance numbers. It would have been a great race!

Other Recommended Races to Check Out

For 2009, here are some other recommended adventure races to check out.

The first one is a 3 hour snowshoe adventure race at Horseshoe Valley in February. Highly recommended!! But you need to read maps and use a compass!

I plan on switching my winter FAR entry to the May event. But the event could be more fun if we get snow the day before.

Be nice to see if the Logsrocksandsteel race runs again. (No site update or email response). 2008 Sounded like a great course from the reviews I have read.

I have been promised by my buddy (Caledon Navigators executive), that it WILL go on. Nothing like riding a mountain bike on single-track and reading a map at the same time!
