Also, it'll be my first time there. Leave from campground and ride up gravel roads, to reach upper Wilson ridge or Yancy, I presume? Any specifics, Rd#'s, signage, etc?

I don't think Mike has gotten to that yet, could be mistaken I rarely venture that far down. Wilson Ridge and Yancey Ridge aren't close to each other. If you are trying to ride both you will be riding a lot of gravel. If that's your thing cool, if not I would suggest a different route. I would also suggest not going alone. Signage is minimal at best.

Oh yeah, I was going to do either Yancey loop or Schoolhouse loop. Looks like Yancey is going to be in best shape I guess. So Yancey loop is gravel up and single track down back to the gravel, yeah?

Schoolhouse is pretty short even with Upper Wilson Ridge. Guess you could do a couple laps? It's not a route I particularly enjoy so I rarely ride it.

As for Yancey Ridge: Sort of? Depends on what direction you are coming from. There are a few ways to get to it. The easiest way would be Roseboro rd to 192 to Old House Gap. There are many turns on Yancey Ridge that either go nowhere or are mandatory. There are no signs so like I said, I would go with someone that knows the way.

Ah, I see. I guess I'll pass. I've seen the YouTube vids and really wanted to hit it - but I guess not really worth a vacation day with some much better riding just as close.

That's kind of a matter of opinion innit? I think Wilson Creek has better riding. That's part of the reason I moved back to the area. Ride with a group that knows where they are going (Headley Ridge and Raspberry Ridge don't count lol)then formulate your own opinion?

Here is Yancy on Mtbproject. Carry your phone with the route and/or Avenza. Yes there are turns, yes you might back track once or twice but I wouldn't go so far as to say you will get lost.
