I'm not sure if this is in the right place, but I think it has to do with the first parts of your drivetrain. Mods, move this if it needs to be moved.
Anyways, I am looking at getting better pedals and shoes for my bike. Would a lake 5050 DH shoes(recessed SPD) work with a Shimano M545 pedal and still clip in right and everything?

I don't have that combo, but it should work. It's not uncommon to have to perform surgery on shoes to make them work properly. I have eggbeaters and almost all shoes have to be trimmed to clear well. My Sidis are the first shoes that I have not had to trim yet.

Thanks for your reply. I just wasn't sure if the recessed cleat could work with the cage on it.
