Most 7 speed freehubs will not accept any higher speed cassettes. They are narrower than modern freehubs. Could even be a freewheel.
I believe you can use a 8 speed shifter on a 7 speed, one click won't do anything. The distance between cogs on a 7 speed are the same as a 8 speed, the 8 speed cassette is wider.
I'm going to try that in the next while on an old road bike I've got.

Good info to know Slash5, thanks. Please let me know how it works out with your old road bike. Anyone else have more input? Pros or cons of doing this conversion?

The geometries may be a bit goofy after throwing a drop bar on it. Make sure it's what you want, especially if you are commuting on it.
Excellent advice. I'll be throwing a leg over it possibly today if not Monday. I am looking for something less aggressive than my road bike and comfort is a priority. Having suffered on frames that are too small for my lanky frame, I'll not make that mistake again.
