Have any of you guys been in Allamuchy since the weekend ? It seems some trail running club ran a cross country running race in Allamuchy, near the Waterloo village entrance, which is no big deal, but they proceeded to paint, what appears to be every other rock, with Day-Glo Orange, paint.

Brilliant Idea Guys !

What the hell were they thinking? In some areas they actually painted warnings, and caution arrows on the rocks. It looks like the side of a subway car all tagged out. You know who's going to be blamed, us, the mountain bikers....

They did that in Mercer County Park last year too. Not only did they paint the rocks but they also painted the trees and the ground as well. To make matters worse they probably painted about 5x the amount of arrows that needed to be painted.

Trail Runners

Do you know who put on the event in MCP? I am looking to send an e-mail to the Park Super on this. Also, the organizers are holding several other races and I will be sending out the appropriate e-mail to those parks.

Thanks for the info!

I have to say that I am absolutely outraged by this display of ignorance and disrespect towards such a beautiful place. I am a local and therefore hold the Allamuchy trail system close to my heart, so the fact that these fools spraypainted one of the few exposed rock sections in the park, turns my stomach.

I plan on voicing my opinion to the folks that organized this running race. I ask that if you too are upset by their actions, please voice your opinion as well. These folks need to realize that if they want to play in our sandbox, or any sandbox for that matter, they need to play nice which intails cleaning up thier crap when they leave. Just because you pay for a permit to use the park, deos not give you the right to do as you please.

What's that motto you see all over the national parks? "Leave only footprints and take only pictures". I think we need to enlighten these idiots before they deface another local park.

How not to mark a race course

In case some of you have not actually seen how the trail running group (www.sportingx.com) had marked their course here is a picture of one area (Four Bump trail). The area is approx 30 ft long.

If you have not please take the time to e-mail the folks there and let them know.

I hope that is a special type of paint that breaks down quickly. Is there such a thing for this type of purpose?

These guys cannot possibly be that stupid could they?
i believe that there is paint that will biodegrade/wash away quickly, kind of like liquid chalk, but who knows if that's what they used. lets hope.

seeing that photo made my stomach turn.

There is a marking paint that is bio-degradable, and it will wash/fade away after a few days of sun and rain, though that's not what they used. They used spray paint. I tried scraping some of the markings off of the rocks, all to no avail. Let's see what they have to say for themselves.

This makes me sick. This morons shouldn't be allowed to host any more events on public lands. I live in NY but would be willing to voice my complaints to somebody. Let me know who.

Just emailed him

Thanks phat for the contact info.

I hope it was the bio-degradable paint, or that the parks knew how they were marking the trail. It's ugly to look at, I hope it cast an ugly eye towards the wrong group (us).

Iron Pete

Ok, I have read his updated page. How do you get mad at someone in his condition??? I am totaly understanding and cmopasionate for his situation. But will he be cleaning up the course or not. I e-mailed Pete earlier in the week and never got a response. Go figure...

Thos of us that have put on races or helped, know the issues with having someone mess with the course (thats why you pre-ride/run) the course. This is part of the gig.

Has anyone else, that e-mailed Pete, heard anything back?

Read the webpage!

From Pete's website: "Yes, I have used water soluble spray paint,..."

and

"I have recently taken to cleaning up the course and found that the paint has already faded in many spots."

Hopefully he will be able to follow up on these statements. This is one case where a heavy rainfall should improve the mountain biking experience.

here's the response from pete. i'm satisfied with his reply.

"Apparently the markings that were made were supposedly made by environmentally friendly water-soluble spray chalk, in which I paid a fortune for. The 5k turnaround was marked in this manner and after 24 hours it was barely visible, enough so that runners actually overshot the mark and kept on going for several minutes. Apparently it looks like it has a more permanent effect than I thought, in which I apologize for. I will not use this type of paint in any future races and will only use the flags and flour to mark future courses.

As for the flags, I will be taking them down tomorrow morning. I was quite busy early this week and had the intention of going out to get the flags.

Again, I apologize for this.

Pete"

Wow...

this thread put me in a sour mood. It's amazing to think people would do this. I was up in Vermont all of last week, and people had stickers that said, and I quote "DON'T JERSEY VERMONT"

at first those stickers upset me, but once I thought about it, Vermont is such a beautiful place, just like Jersey probably once was (not saying that Jersey is ugly, but I think it could be a lot nicer)

It sucks that some people don't even think before they spray paint something, or throw garbage in the woods. :(
