Why This Hole on My Hayes Levers?

As you can see from the pictures there is a rectangular slot on my lever. It seems that brake fluid flows out of this, as you can see from the missing paint but why? Is it a overflow hole?? And what is to prevent this from happening?

Thanks.

Come on, there has got to be a reason somebody knows?
Yes its for overflow. I guess what ever gets by the rubber bladder comes out there. How are your brakes now?

I think it is a vent so the badder can expand and contract correctly. Some times brake fluid gets by the bladder if it is not sealed correctly or their is a tear in the bladder. The bladder should be sealed with Parker O-ring lube between the contact surfaces of the magnesium housing and the bladder.
