---I've always thought of Iowa as the "Midwest". Oh well:skep:
You are correct. And so is MO.

The Great Plains is the broad expanse of prairie which lies east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States of America and Canada, covering all or parts of the U.S. states of New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, South Dakota and North Dakota and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In Canada the name prairie is more common, and the region is known as the Canadian Prairies.

The Midwest is defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as these 12 states:

Illinois: Old Northwest, Ohio River and Great Lakes state
Indiana: Old Northwest, Ohio River and Great Lakes state
Iowa: Louisiana Purchase
Kansas: Louisiana Purchase, Great Plains state
Michigan: Old Northwest, and Great Lakes state
Minnesota: Old Northwest, and Great Lakes state; western part Louisiana Purchase
Missouri: Louisiana Purchase, Border state
Nebraska: Louisiana Purchase, Great Plains state
North Dakota: Louisiana Purchase, Great Plains state
Ohio: Old Northwest (Historic Connecticut Western Reserve), Ohio River and Eastern Great Lakes state. Also a Northeastern Appalachian state in the SE.
South Dakota: Louisiana Purchase, Great Plains state
Wisconsin: Old Northwest, and Great Lakes state

any state whose residents primarily talk with a drawl are bound by us law to be considered southern states in any online public forum that discusses mountain bikes. it was actually an amendment to a incest bill, once again demonstrating that politicians can be quite crafty. im just kiddin. dont get yer nemas in a bunch!

There was a time a few years ago when all of the states that were lumped into the "Great Plains" forum did not even have a presence on mtbr. I am just happy that at least we have forum space for regional discussion. In the perfect world, every state would be given their own forum, but that would get junky pretty fast. Some states would also have very limited posting.

For what it's worth, the "Great Plains" is basically the area of land that lays over the Ogalala aquifer:

What exactly is the Midwest?

Is it this?

Or this?

How about this?

Maybe this?

Hmm, maybe this one?

One more option?

i'm in KC MO and have always wondered why the mtbr guys put MO in this section, we are nowhere near the great plains
Except that western state line of MO borders Oklahoma, Kansas and Nebraska (all 3 states in the Great Plains). I guess that qualifies as being "pretty near". Ditto for Iowa being included with MO in the Great Plains and "pretty near" since it borders states in the Great Plains. Oh well, all we really have to know is that the drive to the west is pretty darn boring for the first 8 - 12 hours as one crosses the plains.

True Dat. Once you get west of Lincoln NE you've got a nice long 8 hour ride of desolate earth you hope to never come across again, just endless nothing. I hate driving through NE. I once went thru KS just for a change in scenery and it isn't much more exciting.
