Why does spandex offend bros?

8595 Views 116 Replies 50 Participants Last post by  Klurejr
Bkxc and couple of his fluffers called me chamois boy in sedona when I was riding up a technical section and they had to stop and wait for me to finish.

Why did my lycra make them feel the need to call me chamois boy and make condescending comments?

Are you being serious?
I've only watched maybe 3 minutes of BKXC and he seems like a tool. Hard to fathom him engaging the superiority thing

I have it on video. Im dead serious. During the sedona mtb festival a few weeks ago. I was banned on here for a little while or I would have posted then.

I was riding up little horse to chicken point and they were coming down from there. They had to stop and let me by and as I went by they made comments, and as soon as I got up it pulled my phone out and then another guy with him made some more dumb comments.
You do things in real life to troll, too?

Damn, evidence like that (If egregious) could probably make his life hurt pretty bad.

About all you can do is get a SurRon and some Carhart overalls and roost their ass. And never wear Lycra again. I’m in your corner (as long as you throw away the Lycra)

Thats not what I'm trying to do. Im asking why spandex offends bros. Im looking beyond the surface. Its a cultural thing. Like bros are anti spandex. And anyone riding in spandex is automatically some elitist. Can't I be a bro in spandex?

You specifically? I believe you already have your answer.

I mean to be fair me even saying bros is condescending, so them calling me chamois boy is nothing worse. I just was trying to build a better understanding of the issue. Its not like he called me something disrespectful. I was a guy in spandex. They thought it was funny to call me chamois boy. I call them bros.

F'm all....

I seriously just don't care that much. I've got some baggies and appropriate shirts, but I simply prefer my spandex. I guess in some ways, I get mild enjoyment out of pulling off things in my full lycra that my enduro-bro buddies can't. But I simply have been wearing lycra so long its just what I feel comfy in......now that I think about it even further....it also suits "my riding system". I rarely wear a C-back, so each one of my jersey pockets has a function (food, phone, CO2/pump). Additionally, when its warm, I can put an extra (3rd) bottle in my jersey pocket also. None of this seems possible with baggies and performance tee. All of this said, my roots are in the racing scene and I ride road bike too, so that does influence my choice too.

Here's photo evidence of my commitment to lycra. I attended the Yeti Tribe gathering a few years ago in Telluride. Since I don't own a Yeti, I rented one from the local shop. Then I proceeded to jump aboard this fresh SB130 and pedal my spandex-clad-self all over the mountain wthl the Yeti baggie-brigade.

After a few minutes away from the computer, I realized that I also have to admit that, I do in fact, leave the lycra at home sometimes. Lift serve.....

I think spandex offends the same bros who drive bro-dozers.

I won’t wear spandex, cause ain’t nobody wanting to see my fat gut hanging over my waist. But if you want to wear underwear on your bike ride, good for you.

Because people like to draw lines in the sand and point fingers at the other guys. It helps distract them from thinking about their micropenises.

Honestly I think the original hate on spandex/lycra was that it in some way signified that people were taking the enjoyment of riding their bike to an "extreme" level. The idea that you would spend an egregious amount on clothing that may get you a few extra watts was a criticism of the commercial spend in road cycling. What is funny now is that there are people buying $250 baggy "MTB" specific clothing and it has come full circle.

To be honest, I ride in both spandex and baggy MTB shorts.. it more depends on the terrain, the day and how I am feeling. I try not to take it too seriously.. but I am also guilty of spending"too much" on this sport. Anyone who points it out on the trail is a tool, but mostly I hardly run into those people.

I don’t know the answer to the question posed, but I do think the OP should try to work the word “bros” into this a little more.
