Who's doing the SM100?

So who's doing the SM100 this year? I'm pretty sure I'll be there, as well as my boyz Allroy and JoeP. (I'm still trying to convince riderx to give it a shot.) We'll all be sporting our 29er rigid singlespeeds. I'm still unsure what gearing I'll use, but it'll probably be my normal setup (32x20). I'll be spinning my ass off on the road, but hopefully I'll be able to climb more than walk.

I failed to finish in '02, but in '03, I completed it at a turtle's pace. I don't have a finishing time goal in mind, just that I do finish. In fact, finishing DFL has its notoriety (as Allroy would know :p). The only thing I can see doing me in is my finicky knees. On some really long rides, they act up, and I can't take anti-inflammatories (due to allergies).

My training is nada. No heart rate zones, weightlifting, eating properly or anything else that takes more effort than riding. I did a long, tough, extremely hot ride on Saturday up on our rocky trails (Gambrill and Frederick Watershed), and I'm still a little sore. I guess that means I need to ride more and on longer rides.

Anyways, holla if you'll be coming out! It'd be interesting to hear about your bike setup and training. This thing is sneaking up fast...

I'm planning on it!

We're still trying to figure out the details.....but hopefully it'll happen this year!

If I do make it I'll likely be riding my rigid Strong, 32x20.

Ha - I've got the registration form sitting right beside me on my desk.

I'm doing it - bar some unforseen catastrophe (like a huge hurricane that drives gas prices through the roof)

I've got ORAMM this weekend to test this flat-landers climbing legs. Really looking forward to it.

I'll almost for sure been on a fully geared bike with a suspension fork at SM.

Training? ....what did Eddy say..."ride lots" ;)

LP
The USPro road race is that weekend and about 1.5 hours from here, so its a tough call. If I do go I'll be rigid and geared 32-20, but it'll be a last minute deal. I'd be much more likely to make it if I had company on the drive, so hopefully someone fairly close by will post up.
I'm planning on being out there on the blacksheep, but I haven't registered yet. A lot of it is contingent on getting over whatever it is that I've been fighting healthwise for the last month. If I can't start ramping up my riding somewhere in the next few weeks, I don't think its going to be feasible....
Ill be there with all the gears and suspension I can muster. I did last year for the first time and It was possibly the best cycling event I have ever participated in. I can’t imagine that ride on a SS though, last year I was pushing a geared bike plenty.

Singles are easier to push!! :D
I tried 32x17 on my 29er last year and it hurt by the end. of course the 3 flats didn't help. so this year maybe 32x18? :)

it is one of, if not the, best events on the east coast IMHO. everyone owes it to themselves to give it a shot once!!

I feel better now...I was starting to feel a little "weaksauce". ;)

LP
Speaking of weaksauce . . .

I’m registered and will be riding a geared hardtail 29er. This will be my first enduro even of any kind. The more I "train," the more I realize how seriously messed up this whole endeavor is. As I was doubled over, seeing stars, and gasping for air out at Elizabeth Furnace on Saturday, I did the math and realized that I was 7 weeks from race day and still riding at an 18 hour race pace. That is so insane I can’t actually get my head around it! Can't wait. ;)

I have been struggling with the thought of doing the SM 100 this year. I set out almost a year ago to stay consistent and train, but that got derailed around New Year. I figure I have about seven weeks to get myself in gear; I hope that's enough to get me to the finish. By the way, that ride at the Watershed was the toughest in a series of three really tough rides I've done in the past three weeks; if that's the best I can do, there's no way I'll finish. Time to start riding more than once a week, and for God's sake, stop boozing so much.

I'm planning on 32X20 or 34X20. Haven't decided yet. Maybe I'll try the Ignitor out again before the race, too, just to see what I've been missing.
I'm still planning to enter this year (rather than slave in the kitchen like I did the last two years). I am not yet certain I will have the legs to finish. Not sure the next 7 weeks will be enough no matter how hard I train. If nothing else, finishing even half of it keeps me out of the kitchen!
I've talked to a surprising number of people who did not finish it the first time out. And without an exception, they all raved about the race and came back to finish or try again the next year. It is stuff like that that keeps me fired up for this ride.
I'll be there. This will be my 4th time around - did it in 02, 04 & 05. It's tough but it's a good time.

Not on a 29'er though. I am going to try to ride myself into the ground in August. Come watch my final moments on earth on September 2nd.
Sm100

I plan on doing it. We'll see how things go. My riding has been pretty much nil. My training includes rides to and from work and changing poopy diapers. Last year I suffered the whole 12hrs it took me to finish. The last 20 miles was a with a broken saddle rail. My gear was 34x21 and I remember thinking it was too hard. This year will be 32x20.

Did you do it on your Monkey or your Voodoo? Which'll it be this year?

Last year was the monkey. I'll probably ride the monkey this year too. Unless you're feeling sentimental towards your old monkey I'd gladly let you ride my monkey if you let me ride your MC.
I'll be there, but just volunteering. . .

For the first time in several years I wont' be riding the whole thing. Due to the presence of a 3 month old baby in my household I haven't had the chance to get out for many rides much longer than an hour all spring/summer so I'm taking the year off. I've e-mail Chris Scott and requested to be able to sweep a section of the course, though. I anticipate that if labor day weekend comes and goes and I haven't gone to the stokesville campground I'll be pretty sad.

For those of you considering it, I strongly encourage you to give it a try. It is one of the best run events I have ever seen, and the course is FUN FUN FUN.

For what it's worth, I did it last year on a Karate Monkey geared 32x20 and had a fine time of it and I'm a bumbling fat guy!
