I picked up a 4X last season for the same reasons as you and it's quickly becoming by favorite bike. It's stock with a Fox RP3 and Saint cranks. I used mine as a XC/Trail bike and as a ski hill bike ... it does it all. I'm 190lbs and find the bike stiff overall. I do dirt tables/gaps, medium sized drops and it's been holding up great. For more DH applications it'll do the trick but the travel does limit you and starts to take it's toll on the body. The Pike is an excellent for with great adjustability.
I've have nothing but positive feedback on this bike in all types of riding.
I've picked the 4x about 1/2 year ago and it's just a peace of art I use it for xc and a little jumps and alot of singltracks and I have to say I'M IN LOVE big time Santacruz made as almost I think a great art of riding mechine. It's a joy ride.
