I am familiar with mountain bikes, but know very little about road bikes. I'm looking to build something to ride with a group of roadies on occasion, but still be adequate for commuting.
What Surly frame would be the best place to start? Long Haul Trucker? Pacer? Cross Check? Any other ideas.

I use a Steamroller for commuting - 50/50 on gravel roads and pavement. I use the same bike for the occasional road ride with friends as well as a few road events (tours), throughout the year. Typically I run a 48:16 in Spring & Summer and a 46:16 in Fall & Winter. Any choice with Surly can't go wrong - you have lots of setup options with any of their models

I have a Cross-Check fixxed with full fenders, and a Pacer full gears. Though I love both bikes, The Cross-Check is my go to bike.

I guess it depends what your commute is like. Pacer or Cross Check. Pacer would be better for group rides with roadies. Cross Check is better if you need fat tires and fenders and like to take it off road sometimes.

the difference is cross check can be fit up either way- pacer not so much
