Well i goofed up but at the end of the day i learned something new or at least you folks will teach me.

I ordered 2 sets of 45NRTH studs one was the XL and one was regular. The XL's look like they would be the better choice as the regulars are super tiny.

I live on the east coast in CT and ride mostly here or VT. Both are known for being icy.

Which should i keep and why?

Thank you !

I run the XL's in the outer rows to hopefully catch at the last minute and run the regular concave in the middle. I figure maybe a little less chance of losing the less grippy studs down the middle and maybe a little faster rolling.

I agree with Cerpss, I have the XL's on the outer lugs of my Wrathchild's and the regular down the middle, works well.
Any chance you have experience with the D5's? I had a couple local guys get in my ear that for how much slower the Wrathchilds roll they don't have much more grip. They both got rid of them. I'm tempted to switch to D5's. I have Bud and Lou for really deep and loose stuff so I only need the d5's to do ok in a couple inches of snow.

I have D5's studded with the regular 45nrth studs, definately a faster rolling tire than the Child's and great for hardpack conditions. Not sure that I'd agree about the grip though, the Wrathchild is much more aggressive in my opinion. Everyone has a different opinion though when it comes to snow, so many variables.
If you already have Bud/Lou for the deep stuff I think you'd be happy with D5's the rest of the time when the trails are packed.

XL stud loss tends to happen more on the back IME. If you have a lot of XL studs then you could consider doing the whole front tire. Or just the edges. Whichever you prefer.

I’m heavy so I don’t find that the D5 or Wrathchild have great float. The D5 is faster rolling. I like it for straight forward riding. For my trails (all single track) I find the Wrathchild faster overall because the rear wheel spins out less, and the front wheel crashes less.

To put it all in context, both tires are faster rolling than Lou on hardpack.

FWIW I have the 3.0 Wraithchilds and run the XL studs up F (have only lost a couple in 2 seasons) I replaced dozens on the R as they tend to rip out easier and I replace them with the standard stud. The more I replace the faster it rolls and it still has good grip.

I was looking at studs and it appears 45nrth came out with another stud size at some point. Maybe they've been out for a while but it was news to me. In between the regular and XL there is now a Large size. They don't have a close up picture of the stud like the other 2 but it looks like the carbide tip diameter is just barely smaller than the aluminum body. I can't tell if there's any height difference in the carbide tip compared to the regular or XL.
