I'm looking to get some new cranks. They will be run as SS and also Rohloff in the near future as well. I'm looking for a BB crank combo that won't break the bank.

Which do you think is better at sealing out water and dirt, a Phil Wood Stainless steal BB or the x-tpe cranks like the Race Face Deus (or even the cheaper LX)?

Hands down Phil wood if you want a well sealed BB that will last. And thats coming from a X-type user

Only real issue is getting high qualitity, light square taper cranks!

I was thinking of using Sugino XD300 cranks or something like that. Are those considered light? They are cheap enough to seem like they are a great value, since they get lots of praise...

I've not seen them

I've not seen the Sugino's. I'm using some old Syncros forged alloy compact cranks, around 435gms and Race Face Next LP compact cranks, 410gms.

I'm also using 42T Spec TA outer ring and 30T and 20T Boone Ti rings with alloy bolts, so cranks (Syncros), rings, bolts, BB, crank bolts comes in around 780gms.

I have PW on all three bikes and would not consider another. I do have problems finding cranks, but its a small price to pay for the awesonme quality of PW! I will say that I am not ruling out X-Type as PW makes bearings for those external BB cups and an installation tool. The combo (tool & bearings) would run about $150, but I would not switch without including PW bearings. Just bought a new set of RF Next sqaure tapers that I found at an LBS. Ended up being much cheaper than either FSA or XTR plus the PW upgrade.

It's not *that* hard to find decent square taper cranks... Apart from Sugino, it's worth looking at TA; their Carmina cranks are available at: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/carmina.asp TA also make another crank, the Vega, which is a bit more MTB oriented (arms are more splayed to clear wider chainstays), and these can surely be found somewhere. FWIW, I'm still using assorted Ritchey Logic cranks (made by Sugino). I bought the first in 1991, and the newest in 2003 - no problems so far. IMO, Sugino forged cranks are as good as it gets.
