if I go for an 888 on a new bike, which will mostly handle freeriding, and some DH, which model should I go for? I'm new to the whole marz thing so I really have no idea what any of the models do. can I get some pointers?

If you get an 05, get a 888rc if you have the money. Better damping and more adjustments.

If your getting an 06 get an 888rc2x if you have the money for the same reasons over the vf.

Dont go vf-anything, whatever you do. You will hate living. (never heard a good thing about them.)

Nickel Plated is around 20-30% stronger/has less friction resistance and has a better life span. Current "Bad ass Black" will crack overtime with heavy use. I've seen it, I saw a hand me down 888 go from Carlin Dunne (was on his back up bike) go to another friend who beat the hell out of it. Then he sold it to a Grom and both stancions cracked and broke off on his first ride.
do not get anything VF....the rebound spikes like a pogostick...just riding one around and i could feel it. the 04 888r model which i have is basically the same as the 05 888rc, which are both amazing. great adjustments and super plush. also look at the 06 rc2x is you can afford it or wait till 07. also look into flat crowns because depending on your frame...the bike will be pretty racked out up front.

WTF....!!!!!!!!! are you serius???.... that shiat is marketing gimmik, give me a break at least you where talking about F1 cars shocks that difference in the friction resistance is so little that the average riader is no gonna notice it. The 2003, 2004 and 2005 boxxers world cup did come with that nickel plated that you are talking about....don't you think if it was really worth they will be still producing that kind of stantions?

The rebound is actually smoother than compression, the compression is the worst part of it....
And I found that SSVF feels better in the parking lot than HSCV or whatever they call it now..But on the bumpy stuff, completely different story...

If you have the $, go for RC, no questions asked...
