Thinking of switching my 8 speed hard tail to ten speed. Currently running a shimano 11-32 with a single front ring and happy with the 32 as the large cog but wouldn't mind if it started with a 12. I would probably try a 34 as the big cog as well, as long it wasn't a massive jump between gears like the old mega-range freewheels were.

Not looking for anything ubber light and high cost, just average cost/weight/durability. Main thing I'm looking for is a smooth transition between say the middle to last (small) cogs.

Thanks for any input.

An XT 11-36 can be had for $65 or so online is weighs in at a respectable 330g.

Bike24.com has the cheapest XT cassettes I've seen around - 40.9 euro, thats even cheaper than the SLX (42,9).

I wouldn't worry to much about the cassette that much, the slx would definitely do the job and be lighter than what's on there now even with 2 more gears. I would save a little and put it towards a nice derailleur and shifter since they will more of a difference.
