I just purchased a mp3 player and was wondering if anyone has an opinion on the best place to get music for it... I bought it at circut city and they gave me a free month with napster, but I think I have to sign up for some multi month deal to use it... It's not an ipod its a 20gig something (im not sure as it's not in front of me)
so any help on good deals and large variety in music would be great.

i use musicmatch

I was using musicmatch software before the whole online buying music became a neccessity (due to the downfall of free music sharing). I had to buy the upgraded software, but like I said, I did it awhile back. Now I also use them to buy my music. I don't pay any montly fees. I just have my credit card on file and every so often I'll log on and download a song or two. 99 cents each.
I have a lot of friend that use Itunes but I'm an anti-mac (more to piss off my friends than anything). I have a dell jukebox mini that syncs up well with musicmatch.
I've heard ok things about napster, I just don't want to signup to something where I have to pay a monthly fee as I'm not a huge downloader.
my 99 cents

Another vote for allofmp3.com

It's $0.02 per MB.... so cheap it feels like stealing. But the good news is it is perfectly legal. Its a russian site but I've been using it over a year with only positive things to say.

do those sites work with I Tunes & an Ipod?

I'm on Itunes but their selection is pretty standard. How does one download from other sites? Do you need MP3 software? THX And if you do get downloads can you move onto an Ipod?

Am I reading that right? I searched for a couple of different bands and next to the albums were price tags of like $2. Is it $2 to download a whole album??? That is one killer deal!
Yep, that is correct. You can however pick what format you want it in and the higher the quality the bigger the download and the price will go up accordingly. The most I have spent for OGG 500 quality is about 4$ for an entire album. :D

Sorry for the n00b question, but I am new to the mp3 player world - when you download an album, is that your music to download and keep? I got my wife an mp3 player for christmas and am looking for a good site to download music from. I was going to buy her a subscription to either napster or launch, but this seems like a way better deal! Also, no monthly fee???

No monthly fee. If you pay for it it's yours. For safety reasons I use XROST gift cards paid for with PayPal. I'm a little leary of giving a credit card number to a Russian site.Allofmp3 is supposed to have PayPal up and running soon though.
Here are a couple of good reviews and tutorials on Allofmp3.

Thanks for the info and the tip about XROST. Looks like I'll be getting music from here too!

Its a killer deal because allofmp3.com does not pay the artists or record companies for the music. Indeed, I suspect that most artists and record companies oppose allofmp3.com. Moreover, the legality of allofmp3.com in the US is questionable. Nonetheless, it looks like there is nothing that can be done to stop allofmp3.com users. Nonethess, I don't use it. I use Napster because it is 100% legit. If the artists and record companies are against it, that is argument enough for me.
