Where to Live Within 90 Minutes of LAX

Yo,

I just took a new job and I'm thinking about moving my family to SoCal. I've got two elementary school aged kids, so I need to be near decent schools. Who's got recommendations on where the best combo of schools, community, and riding is within 90 minutes of LAX?

Also, would you choose SoCal over Phoenix, if given the choice?

Please, no politics. I know the pros and cons of all of that as I'm not living in a black hole.

Would appreciate any life advice.

You should probably elaborate on a couple things...

LAX travel time varies considerably due to traffic. 90min during peak traffic pretty much means you're stuck in LA county.

Budget.

I was just going to say “At 4:00 PM, or 2:00 AM?”

90 minutes should give a few block radius out from LAX.
Joking aside if you have the choice I'd go Phoenix.
Outside of the weather and surfing, there was nothing about LA that would bring me back and it's only gotten worse since I left based on what I can tell.

LA over Phoenix any day of the week, unless you are okay with 100+ degree weather for more than 6 months of the year.

Instead of saying 90 min, lets change that to 90 miles. Then you can assume 90 min when traffic is not bad (Sunday mornings are usually very easy to travel across LA, I can make it from Oceanside to Ventura in less than 2 hours on a Sunday morning)

so 90 miles... My house is 92 miles from LAX and right now it is showing 1.5 hours travel time:

If you go with 90 miles, then you have the options of LA County, Orange County, Parts of Northern San Diego County, Riverside and San Bernardino County, Ventura and Kern County.

The options for good schools and nice housing are wide open at that point:

Budget is going to be your main concern.

Check out this thread for more info on most of the places within 90 miles of LAX

Summer in the LA area is warm but tolerable. Can you say the same for Phoenix?

All that aside you have quite a bit of choice within 90 minutes of LAX - all of LA county, much of OC and a good chuck of eastern Ventura and western San Bernardino and Riverside counties are within that range if you're flexible on commute hours. I live in the Conejo Valley of eastern Ventura County and commuted to LAX for the last 4 years of my career. Lots of good MTB out here for all age levels and decent schools. The commute to and from LAX wasn't fun, but would typically take about 1:20 each way in rush hour or less than an hour if you could stagger your hours. I did an extreme version of this and worked from 5 AM to 2 PM most days and shaved it down to around 45 minutes - YMMV.

The 405 can be super fun at rush hour between the Valley and LA.... UGH.

To the OP - why is LAX the baseline, is that where your work would be, or just for traveling?
Thanks, this is a good start. Looking at 90 minutes, late at night, or early in the morning. I'll be working out of LAX 3-6 times per month. So 90 miles is probably a good radius. Carlsbad to maybe Santa Barbara, if I'm really pushing it. Don't want to be too far east, in the heat. Probably within ten miles of the coast. I've got some cash from selling a house in NorCal, so pricing is a little less of an issue, but still important.

Now that that's established, opinions on schools, riding etc? I know literally nothing about riding in SoCal other than watching some YouTube videos. Also, looking for a town that isn't just a bunch of strip malls and sprawl, if possible. That may be the hard part.
3-6 days is not bad at all.

To stay close to the coast check out Thousand Oaks to Camarillo to the north east and Orange County and north SD County to the south west. Nothing else between is close to good riding.

Every place has its compromises. Just speaking of Ventura County I'd say Thousand Oaks/Westlake/Agoura has the best schools, but as my wife says, "there's no there there". No real town center, well laid out suburbia, nice parks and trails but otherwise pretty dull. Simi Valley and Moorpark are much the same (though arguably - and from my biased viewpoint - not quite as nice as the Conejo). Ventura is a lot more lively and diverse with a nice downtown and a fun beach vibe, but the schools aren't as good in general and there are fewer MTB trails. Any further out than Ventura (Ojai, Santa Barbara) are getting a bit too far from LAX to realistically consider a regular commute.

All of these places have decent MTB trails - probably the greatest range of trails in the Conejo, but both Simi and Ojai have their own very worthwhile local trail systems. There is some local MTB riding in Ventura, but most trails are 15-20 miles away (east in the Conejo, west in Santa Barbara or north in Ojai).

I'd be looking to get as far away from LAX as possible within reason given the frequency of your commute.

SB is probably a great option... on the edge of civilization for escapes North, good riding, great weather, nice town vibe. I don't believe that comes cheap though...

I personally wouldn't chose TO/Conejo Valley specifically for it's fairly tame trail systems, but it's a nice area.

I'm partial to S.OC for it's proximity to trail variety, but either side of Pendleton is definitely worth a look IMO.

Difficult without knowing income, budget and lifestyle, but personally I like North of the Hills (Sherman Oaks, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, etc) which is about 20 miles to LAX ... That could take 30 minutes or 2 hours depending on traffic. I think your biggest decision is do you want Los Angeles, Ventura or Orange County. They're both very different and have their own unique qualities ... And I absolutely love Phoenix. It's where I vacation most by far, but that's not a decision anyone but you and your family could possibly make. As far as riding, there's plenty of spots no matter where you choose, but I think OC would be your best bet as it's in close proximity to so many great spots.

Edit: check out "Tommy Huynh t_wrex_MTB" YouTube channel. He's got a ton of videos in SoCal and titles them all with their location (Santiago Oaks, Simi Valley, Mt Wilson, Santa Barbara, San Clemente, etc).
Just a few comments:

1) 90 minutes is a bad judge. On a good day, you can get from LAX to San Diego in 90 minutes. A bad day, 5+ hours. Same goes for being in Thousand Oaks or Ventura (but the high end is more like 3 hours).
2) You don't say where you are travelling, but Burbank has lots of flights and using that as your primary airport and only using LAX when needed can save you a lot of grief and open up where you live.
3) All other things being equal, the closer you are to the beach, the nicer, the better the weather, and the more expensive. Right by LAX you have places like Redondo and Hermosa Beach, a little further south the Palisades if you rolling in extreme amounts of money. Orange County near the coast gets you the riding that the LA beach communities don't have. Again, look at where you are flying and your options for using John Wayne as your primary airport instead of LAX if in Orange County, as that may affect your location choices.

He did say, he will be working at or near LAX 3 to 6 days a month.

Also traffic is less of a problem if you can commute on a motorcycle, and the weather in SoCal makes that possible. I have been doing it since 2011.
Oxnard, Ese. Sycamore Canyon and the Santa Monica mountains is super close. 65 or so miles to LAX via 101, and less than 60 miles via PCH.
I've been exploring the Irvine/Aliso Viejo area a bit and the schools seem pretty good. Oak Park/TO schools also look pretty good. Any comments on OC vs Ventura counties, culturally speaking? Santa Barbara is great, but it's definitely pushing the budget limits and the schools appear to be crumby. However I think it's probably everyone's dream to live there.

Not everyone is cut out for splitting lanes. I did it for years commuting (fortunately don’t commute anymore), but approaching 50 I am thinking of selling my bike and cashing in my chips before my number gets pulled. It is not if, just when and how bad.

I was raised from age 9 to 14 in Laguna Hills, Orange County and lived for almost 5 years in Ventura when I was first married back from 1999 to 2003. I have friends and family in both places. I have a fondness for the OC because of growing up there, but Ventura is where I would go if I needed to move.

The OC is more crowded and expensive than Ventura, and is very much suburbia everywhere. No old town centers(apart from some of the older cities closer to LA), lots of good food and culture, but IMO just kind of Sterile.
If you are into beer, OC has a better beer scene with the standout The Bruery up in Placentia.

Ventura has a small town vibe with all the bigger city amenities, but less trails nearby. There is some real character to Ventura.
The beer scene is smaller, but still good. Proximity to Santa Barbara is great for date nights with some of the best dining in the state up there.

Personally I would never live in Thousand Oaks, just no personality to that place, not unless I could find a ranch with a few acres to live on. But access to trails is closer in the T/O area than in Ventura. I got into the sport while living in Ventura, and we would regularly drive to Sycamore Canyon. Point Mugu SP
Some of the trails there have some amazing views of the Ocean and the Channel Islands, it is accessible from the coast side (where I usually parked) or from inland at Newbury Park, right near T/O.
