When to replace pads?

I have a set of Roach hard shell knee/shin guards that I've owned for over ten years. I got them originally for downhill, but then never went much and didn't wear them for years. For the last three or four years, I've started hitting the park about 4-5 times a year. The pads look in good shape and fit well, but I'm wondering if these things deteriorate over time? As in, does the protective shell lose integrity and ability to protect me in case of impact?

I don't know about hard shells, is there a foam layer under the hard shell? It might be down to the material that foam is made of, if the hard shell hasn't taken any big impacts, and isn't prone to UV or other degradation over time?

I have the same question about D30 (soft) pads. Below is the best answer I could find ("test if it still gets hard on impact if you aren't sure? And, if it is removable, take it out and look for damage")

WHAT IS THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF D3O® PRODUCTS?
The life expectancy will depend on the conditions the material endures and how it is looked after during use and storage.

D3O® protectors are designed to withstand multiple impacts. However, the re-use-ability of the protectors will depend on the severity of the impact. After any significant impact the protectors should be inspected by the end-user.

HOW MANY TIMES CAN D3O® BE HIT OR COMPRESSED AND STILL RECOVER?
All D3O® materials are engineered to withstand multiple impacts. However, in the cases of extreme forces, the ability to recover fully may be compromised.

Similarly, the application and environment will affect their ability to withstand multiple impacts.
