Wheel Suggestions for MKIII?

1210 Views 18 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  ska todd
After a nasty endo wreck in Soquel Demo Forest in Santa Cruz, I obliterated my rear wheel and mhy shoulder, AC speration and no bike riding for 4-6 weeks. Stock WTB from a '05 MKIII Comp. Upgrade time! I am not hard on my wheels, only when I crash like a complete idiot. Had a feeling my Reba is suspect for my last two consecutive endos ;)

Close to getting one of those nice Red 05 Pikes, so 20mm hub would be essential.

So anyone have some fairly inexpensive suggestions? Ideas Mavic Deetracks...

Could I take my still in tact front wheel and put it in the back, buy a front wheel and wait till I got more cash to upgrade the front?

Help a fellow Monkey!

Sorry to hear about the shoulder, and the wheels.

My rec is for a handbuild. I already have had many issues with Mavic system wheels (Crosslands) and had to get a new set before they turned to dust.

I'm running Mavic XM321 w Woodman hubs that had built at http://www.universalcycles.com If you get them built locally, they will do a free post-couple ride tune when the wheels settle (essential for strength). And any issues, you can speak w/ the builder.

Hope hubs have convertable QR/20mmm hubs.

Lots of good reviews for the Azonic Outlaws (also QR/20), Performace sources the same wheels: called Loco.

mr. p you are running the xm321 and woodman hubs with your nixon fork correct?

how are you liking that combination and how is it holding up to rough stuff?

how was your experience with universalcycles and mike?

my main concern after my crash is to get a much longer travel fork, pike or nixon, and a more durable wheelset. Never heard anything on woodman hubs.

I am running the TPC version of the Nixon Comp (no adjustable travel). It has let me fly down the hills, pretty stiff and small stuff at speed is like butter.

They are pretty staight forward to fully pull apart and service yourself. I had a rebound issue and a call to Answer and a few days, got a new rebound, I installed and was riding without losing a weekend.

A through Axle Nixon comp is $200 at PricePoint right now. I'm diggin it.

Tho I will probably upgrade mine to include RTWD travel adjust for better technical climbing. The Nixon is a bit big for the 04 HP. I adjusted the stem down and seat more forward and I am 90% there for climbing. Make sure you pay attention to Axle to Crown heights more than travel (Nixon = 518mm).

Also make sure you get a spring that fits your weight/riding style.

I called Universal Cycles about the Woodman Hubs and they described them as XT quality level and weight, but with cartridge bearings. They even use an XT freehub, so replacement is easily available. So far so good with over 6 months.

I had to retension the rims professionally after they settled in a few weeks. So consider that in the cost.

I am trying to build up my ride tough enough so that I can point my wheel into something and only have to worry about the operator limits. So far so good.

I believe end of summer. The front hub is retardo light. It's a 20mm version of their 240 XC disc hub!

I got a set of 440's on 819's built up then a week later they announced details of the new 240 bolt thru:madman:
those things are flipping insane, wonder where I can cop some...gotta call Larry or Chad?

Funniest thing I've seen today!
Probably not for you, but I'm 165 pounds, do a lot of climbing, am a silky smooth descender and don't ride rocks or huck. My unexciting wheelset is:

Black Dimension 20mm convertible hub (220 grams) mated to black Revolution spokes and black 717 rim. Silver nipples.
Black WTB Laser Disc Lite rear hub with same spoke/rim spec as front. It's the 06 version, and my builder promises it's bombproof (if I stay out of the wet, ha).

$345 total. Obviously if I had the cajones like the others to really ride aggro through logs, ravines and small dogs I'd be on a different set.
I would think those new Easton Havocs are the perfect match for an MKIII!
My Vote for new wheels...

...goes to Mavic CrossMax!
Yeah...I know their big $$. :eekster: But...
I have had these wheels for 3 years on my Hollowpoint Team and I beat the tar out of them!! :madman: They have required only routine spoke adjustments to keep them running straight and true. They're light and they're UST!
My 06 MKIII came with DT Swiss rims and the rear got bent after an easy endo (you know, the kind that your can walk over the bars...) What a disappointment! :madmax:
I swapped the Mavics over to the MkIII. The Mavic front hub is QR/20mm convertable. Sweet. :p
The DT Swiss/WTB front wheel off the MKIII is collecting dust until I can swap the hub to a QR type.
Check Ebay...maybe you can get a deal on some.

I've had similar things happen to Mavic & WTB rims, neither of them are bad rims. It more has to do with particular circumstances then bad wheels. The DT/Swiss rims that I've had typically stay straighter longer and are easier at build up than competitors. They are also pretty light.
