Howdy Y'all,

This isn't SSpecific, just another way we might get to know a little more about one another and the places we ride. You know, share the mtn biking love.

I feel indescribably lucky to live in a place that's SS friendly, weather allows year 'round riding on true, 18" wide singletracks amongst stunning old growth forests. Many who live here (Willamette Valley, Oregon) feel we have "the best backyard."

All around Berkeley there are great little coastal ranges, but the anti-bike community (mostly equestrian folks) are well-established and funded. and typically dominate the discussion of trail access. So the stuff we can (legally) ride is mostly double-track/fire road.

State, county and national parks, wild and scenic rivers, world class BC skiing, world class boating, great brewers, even greater people, an excellent university, and some of the best trails I've ridden anywhere. 1.5 hours is the furthest I would have to drive for any of this but most of the trails are 15-30 minute ride on the bike path, which is my back yard.

I was riding up a sugarsand hill full tilt and when I crested I was face to face with a 4n a half footer..
I grabbed the binders and my buddy ran into me almost endoing into a makeout session! We had to walk around with our bikes between us and the hissing lizard getting scratched by the local variety of sharp and stingy bushes on the other side. I've got pics but only a "smart" phone for internet..
I chased a large cat (back as high as my 29er tire) for several yards down a trail through halipat in Stuart FL as well, after that I didn't ride there alone anymore..

nooo..... he is about 10' long.... that is well over the "capable of eating me in one sitting" size.....

Wow, guess we're neighbors.

The winter is a little lame in Oregon- you can't go fast and there are some trail limitations....

During the summer it can be pretty amazing. In a 100 radius from my house I can do big rides every weekend and not repeat a trail. Most have a ton of climbing on fireroads followed by long, flowing and curving descents that sometimes seem endless. Traction is amazing and there is old growth that can't be seen in most of the states and some pretty unique scenery. I often spend five hours without seeing a soul- we have some of the least crowded trails too.

We also have the best regional beers for an urban area our size.
