The Black Canyon Trail is a redesign of a very old OHV "trail"/route that runs from Lake Pleasant Road north to...well, wherever they decide to end it. The old route ran up to Mayer, basically, running along the eastern face of the Bradshaws.

I've ridden it several times from the "new" trailhead off New River Road up the "new" singletrack to its terminus at around the Agua Fria River. It is well constructed and not super-challenging but you get some great views and you get to ride in the high desert, which is a nice change for the low desert city folk. There are a couple gut-busting climbs, particularly on the out-and-back portion out to the river. There is at least one moderately dangerous descent, dangerous primarily because of the looseness.

Groovy ride, highly recommended if you live in that part of town and/or want to ride something less difficult than Go John @ Cave Creek Rec Area.

Trailhead is up a series of dirt roads that starts at 47th Ave & New River Road. Head west. Beyond that it's hard to explain. They're working on new signage.

I've ridden this trail North from New River Road a couple of times, nice ride, nothing great but fun none the less. Today while ridding North on New River Rd. I spotted a trailhead on the South side, trail goes all the way to Carefree Highway at about 51st Ave, no signs South of Carfree Highway so maybe that's where it starts. I'm not sure where it crosses Lake Pleasant Rd but I'd like to know, it would have to be pretty close to home for me, would make for a nice long ride.
I heard that the BLM wants to fix-up the trail and has contracted IMBA to design a new trail system. Paul's description of the main trail is good. I think the main trail is ~60 miles long (???). In addition, they're planning to add several side loops off of the main trail. The goal is to model it after the Kokopelli trail system in Fruita, CO. Cool idea but it will take a lot of work to make it happen.

The IMBA trail care crew is doing a trail work event in Black Canyon on 9/25. (http://imba.com/tcc/schedule.html) I'm planning to scope out this trail then. Probably good if we can round up a lot of MTB'ers for the trail work to show the BLM that more than just equestrians & OHV'ers are interested.
Hopefully this will all be linked together with the multi-use trail plan that Maricopa County is making progress on up there. My bro, who works for them, just surveyed out a connector trail coming from Daisy Mountain through Anthem to Cave Creek (Elephant Mt. Trail) He says the trail starts over at Lake Pleasant and ends where the new Daisy Mt. overpass is on I-17.

I'll put on my calendar for 9/25 trail work day - anyone else?
