I just passed the 8,000 mile mark on my Alfine 11. Regular oil changes and gear cable position checks (the adjustment has never changed). I don't see what warrants the negativity.

I went through 5 A11 hubs over a period of maybe 4 months before I gave up. By the end, I could break the hub at will just by putting it in 2nd gear and pedaling hard up a steep hill. I don't know how you managed to get 8000 miles on yours but I don't know that I got 80 miles on any of mine.

Maybe I've just been lucky, but my experience with several Shimano IGH and derailleur-based drivetrains has been mostly positive.

oil leaks are what warrant the negativity

As stated in my post: oil leaks. Maybe not on yours but it seems I am not the only one who is having that problem. Sourcing the various seals is a pain.
