What would cause this? chain slack

This is just a quick guess. It might be your rear hub. The freewheel is not disengaging when you are coasting. Rebuild your freewheel, if you can.

could be that, but it's also possible that your rear hub's cassette freebody is encountering some major drag. Knowing the hub make could help us identify the issue.

Couple Other Ideas

Stiff chain link/links...this could cause the chain to get hung up in the r derailleur, on a cassette cog or on a chainring.

Bent/damaged/worn chainring teeth...this would hold the chain on the chainring longer and cause it to wrap down the back closer to the chainstay when not under load.

If the chain came off the top of the cassette I would imagine it got caught between the cassette and spokes and that could have damaged it a bit causing stiff links.

Clean/degrease your chain then lube it. if that doesn't help, check if your freewheel is spinning freeley. If, not, take it to your LBS or pull it apart and grease it.
If all else fails, your chainring or cassete gears might be worn.

Joe...... after you've checked the links and chain like both Shane and Eli have outlined also check behind the cassette to make sure the spokes were not mangled and making contact with the cassette which could also cause the drag...something is making contact and i'd take the cassette off of the wheel to inspect (chain, cassette, chain).

I took my bike into the lbs and they can see that a seal has came loose and is misaligned. they are going to take my hub apart and fix this. i hope this is the problem but i do not know what would have caused this.
